Just a thought...the figures seem slightly out of date, but makes for a good read...

Refugee population by country or territory of asylum | Data | Table

I'll 'come out' too. I'm a shrink with a specialism in children's trauma. I get parachuted into some refugee camps in the ME to advise on how to best handle situations in crisis now and again in the sheer weight of numbers overwhelming infrastructure. I can't remember the exact ratios but for example Jordan/Lebanon have in the range of 2-6m folks born and bred there but are hosting about an additional 20-30% as refugees...so Arabs do their bit. The house of Saud plays a canny game however...they are s.hit scared that additional refugee populations will eventually disturb their power.

Humanitarian issues aside for the moment, I'm sure not many would relish that oil rich nation falling into the hands of extremists.

I haven't got the answers to this, but I am sure it is a whole lot more complex than jingo-is tic nimbyism.

    Cheers,

    C

Yep. Sounds like you've got a finger or two on the pulse.

Nation-building begins at home. With Statesmen/women (notice I didn't say politicians).

It's one thing to peddle one's national "wares" and "values" all over the world when they work.

It's quite another when after the first bite, the buyer discovers it's rotten/hollow in the middle, or becomes an addiction.

Jordan/Lebanon have been DOING their lifting as well as they are able - other have not.

    **********

I'd like to see R&D put into developing alternative energy sources so nation's can move on without -- or at least cut down on-- the "value" that oil has on the international world stage.

There's freedom to and then there's freedom from.

I want freedom to develop other energy sources so my nation can have freedom from foreign oil addictions.

It is a tremendous pity what happened to Lebanon. Maybe it had to be destroyed so it couldn't become a lasting example of what could be.

Yep, Enoch Powell, should have made him PM. He would have sorted British Immigration problems out and Europe's.
