    First paragraph:
"One anonymous American billionaire has done just that and plunked down $2 billion dollars for a stunning 25 thousand-acre paradise in the northern Philippines. But despite its hefty price tag, the buyer has only been given a 25-year lease on the island."

It's a very simple rule for owning land in the Philippines....foreigners cannot. Maybe they can throw it under a corporation that they own (usually a minority share of), maybe they put it in the wife/girlfriend's name, maybe they lease the land for a million years.....but "they" never own it. The way that contracts are upheld I would be very skeptical to even lease long term.

The guy only got a 25 year lease on the island for 2 billion dollars? Are you freaking kidding me? A fool and his money......but how did he manage to get so much money in the first place? SO many other things I would do with 2 billion dollars.

    Then this little gem:
"'With its vibrant and buoyant real estate market, buying property is becoming more fun in the Philippines,' Jacqueline van den Ende, of property website Lamudi Philippines, said."

It's not "more fun" to pay full price for something you can never own.

    And this;

For the world’s ultra-rich, this is what £1.2billion gets you these days.

A mystery buyer from the US has paid the staggering 10-figure figure sum for a 25-year lease on the picturesque island of Fuga in the northern Philippines.

For those without a calculator or a supercomputer for a brain, that breaks down to a measly £48 million per year until the lease expires or is renewed.

For the same amount of money, the wealthy individual could have bought the majority of Kensington Palace Gardens, London’s most expensive street.

Fuga offers more than enough space to build a personal paradise or luxury resort for holidaymakers, but the anonymous person who splashed out on the 24,000-acre tropical island will not be alone.

Located in Cagayan Province, it is home to just under 2,000 people who live in poverty in a small village that doesn't have electricity, running water, health services or roads. The rest of the island is uninhabited.

I wonder if; in the next 25 years, the original inhabitants will benefit in any way shape or form, after all that was their home first, and if they do, if they are anything like the original inhabitants here in Oz, that 2,000 will quickly swell to 20,000 when the Relatives move in with kin folk for their chop of the action... It will be interesting to follow, then see how many other 'Island Groups' try to sell out to the highest bidder... :(

I understand the whole "foreigners" cannot own land so why build a house in just the wife's name if things go to hell later. I will only speak to my home country, but if things went to hell the wife would most likely end up with the house anyway and you'd be paying the mortgage.

I never thought twice about buying "paying" for the lots or the house build. Obviously I feel we have a strong relationship, but if things did go to hell I am young enough to start over...done it before.

As always, this is just my opinion.

I have been knocked down so many times nothing bothers me anymore, for me I am happiest when I have nothing at all, and building something that will help my Wife and children in their future life seems normal to me...

It might sound strange, but my ex-Wife who shafted me for another man has full and utter access to my Bank Accounts, and often will transfer funds for me when asked, has full access to my Centrelink, my Medical aspects, and is also a friend to my now Wife...

'If' things turn to shyte then I will brush myself off and move on as usual. I no longer subscribe to the old "He who dies with the most Toys wins" logic, to be poor and carefree without all of the modcons, flash Home or Car or shiny things where I am happy at, just as long as when I am done, my Wife has somewhere to raise the kids, then the kids have somewhere to live when she is gone or to sell to give them a boost up in their own lives.

The piece of land I am looking at weighs in around $7,000 AUD and I plan to spend around $15,000 AUD when the home is finished... We can pay to have the majority of the framework built then once we can move in we can line the inside and finish it off as we can afford to do so as a 'together project'... She would be just as happy staying in 'her section' of Mama and Papa's House that she owns already, but we are hoping to let Mama and Papa to live in our section when we finish the improvements then move into our new place.
