Apart from windows and doors, some burglars have entered via aircon holes - either ones left empty, ones with only a flimsy cover (eg ply, cardboard) or they have even pushed out the aircon itself.
It was explained to me that they use kids to enter who then unlock a door from inside - one obvious reason is the kids are small enough but also there is no legal responsibility if they are under 12 years of age and so, I assume, if they are detected entering then the adults can scarper.
The landlord who told me this (whist discussing an actual burglary that took place via an aircon hole and only three houses from mine) said he screws the aircon casing to the hole's sides.
I had no dog at the time but the wife is more ferocious.

An interesting discussion. Personally, we take a medium approach - dog that barks at anything that moves, padlocked gates and security grills on windows. Would be interesting to know how many, if any members have actually suffered break-ins and what areas.
