This thread is created for the amusement of our Cebu Pacific cynic and moderator, Rhoody. We are indeed fortunate here in Dumaguete to be served by two competing airline carriers: PAL and CP. Readers will have enjoyed several exchanges amongst us on the subject of CP and its service or lack of same. They will know that Annabelle and I both enjoy our frequent trips to Cebu on CP's ATR turboprop aircraft.

For those of you, who may not already be aficionados of high performance, short field capable, high-wing monoplanes try exploring this link to the manufacturer of our favourite aircraft:

    ATR Regional Aircraft - ATR

I also enjoy turning circumstances on their head to see what happens in a reverse scenario situation. Last evening, I was TV channel surfing and came across a program on aircraft crash scene investigations. I heard the word "ATR" and stopped. The program was about an ATR aircraft, which did not make it to its planned destination - the airport at Palermo, Sicily. It ditched into the Mediterranean Sea instead.

The technical investigation revealed, amongst other things, that the ATR aircraft, in an "engines out" situation makes a very good glider. For every 1000 feet in altitude of height, the ATR will glide three miles if properly handled. This aircraft, if better handled could have and should have made it to Palermo. Hhhhmmm, this situation sounds familiar.

Aha! Is this Cebu Pacific's guilty secret? Is it their intention to seduce us into buying discounted seats and trying this out - on us? The ATR could be launched from DGT and pointed towards CEB. At 25-30000 feet the engines could be deliberately shut off. The ATR would then make it all the way to Cebu as a glider. Is this the secret of low airfares? Is this how Cebu Pacific will save money? Is this the true meaning of a GO Lite fare? Is Rhoody right after all?
