All couples will now be allowed to have two children, the state-run news agency said, citing a statement from the Communist Party.

The controversial policy was introduced nationally in 1979, to reduce the country's birth rate and slow the population growth rate.

However, concerns at China's ageing population led to pressure for change.

The one-child policy is estimated to have prevented about 400m births since it began. China to end one-child policy - BBC News

Two children is reasonable. That's the rate to maintain a population isn't it?

Yep, they finally realized their 'one-child' policy = an epic fail. So, maybe that's the true reason for the military buildup on the fake islands; to invade, take women from other S.E. nations bring back home to make up for gender imbalance. Time to sharpen your bamboo weapons, guys!
Yeah, I'm in a weird mood today.

How was it an epic fail? They lowered the birth rate from 2.8 in 1979 to 1.5 in 2010 and the policy was supported by a large portion of the population. The West complains about human rights but it was the West that was complaining about the dangers of Chinese overpopulation. So the West complains if they reproduce too much but then they complain when don't reproduce enough.....I think the West should just STFU about how much the Chinese are doing it.

One thing about the one-child policy is that, according to news I've read over the years, women aborted/abandoned more females and kept the male babies as the culture depended upon the males to carry the name, "bring home the bacon",take care of the elders, etc.

Now, there are many less females than males, and this is now leaving many eligible men without a spouse. Women (and their family) can be a lot more picky in who they choose to marry.

Not all families were restricted to one child. When I spoke to my Chinese guide/translator about this in 2003, he said that certain farmers were excepted, and some families paid a type of "tax" penalty if they went over one. But the bulk of China went for one child as having one additional child was not affordable to the masses.

Not sure how accurate this info is from the guide/translator. I did take him at his word as he was a Chinese National with a university degree and spoke seven languages.

    He was a bachelor....

Just ask the single Chinese men born after 1979 how they feel about it. Again, I say epic fail.

Oh and, STFU you say? I suppose you would also blame the West for the female genocide the policy led to?
