Corona Virus - as of 4 feb

So the virus lab in Wuhan was changing the genes (the 'master plan' for constructing the virus) within the bat corona virus and, it seems, introduced genes from HIV? I have read that a patient in Thailand has been successfully treated against nCoV using antiviral drugs used to treat HIV and influenza. I also note that a man died in Manila but was reported to have HIV but not nCoV - any connection?

Was the intention of using HIV to modify the protein coat? That would, of course, make it less receptive to existing immunity against the (original) unmodified protein coat. Or was the intention to use the modified corona virus to introduce some part of the HIV genes into a host as a form of HIV vaccine? Or was it in any way connected with trying to make a vaccine against cornaviruses? (Which China would be interested in after their experience of SARS).

Very dangerous to mess about with viruses - especially as labs worldwide have had escapees.

For me I love facts but in their absents I look at what facts I have and then try and connect the dots.
Let me try and connect the dots.
There is a shortage of surgical glove in town so the news is "the virus is spread by direct contact". Virus propagation is not my native language. As far as I know corona type viruses are spread through droplets from coughs and sneezes. Tell people anything so they don't panic.
Airlines stop flying to/from China. I don't think they did that on a whim (or a FB post). Someone told them "shut it down".
Countries don't start putting their citizens in quarantine for 14 days because they are returning from China for no good reason.

I'm going to have to make up some data but you will see my point: 100 dead and 10000 infected. The mortality rate is 1%. WRONG.

It should read 1000 infected 2 weeks ago 100 dead today. Mortality rate 10%.
Frankly this sh*t scares the crap out of me.

I'll just stay close to home until there are some FACTS, I'll deal with them when they are known.

 

If you google "was corona virus engineered in china", there are multiple links saying it was not genetically engineered. The plot thickens.......

 

You are absolutely correct that the death rate lags the infection rate.

You are also absolutely correct that we do not have all the facts - in truth, we know hardly anything. Most 'facts' will come out after this is over - some will be true facts and some will be lie 'facts'.

You are absolutely correct that in the absence of facts it is up to the individual to do what is best for himself and his family on the assumption that things are not good. Heads you live, tails you don't die.

I am not in Dumaguete so I don't know what is happening there about people wearing face masks - no one wants to be the only person wearing one! But if they are being used then I would certainly join that crowd. And it cannot be stressed enough about washing hands and not touching the face as the eyes, nose and mouth are all gaps in the castle walls (the skin - immunity's first line of defence).

 

If you want facts then read the CDC and WHO websites. Sure, a bit dry, not much to wet the appetite of the conspiracy theorist, not cutting edge, no wild guesses or theories, just facts.

Locally, SU is going to an 'alternative learning scheme' for their School of Basic Education (SBE) starting on the 5th, to be reevaluated on the 10th. Basically 'stay at home and follow the lesson plan. And all extracurricular programs are cancelled for the month of February, including athletics. So I wouldn't be surprised to see some others follow their lead...

It is almost certain that the source of the virus was the lab. The question is, what were they doing? On the positive side, they may have been working on a new vaccine, or on the dark side, they were working on biological warfare. Of course everyone is saying this is not the case, what would you expect them to say?

It is also almost certain that the numbers are way way worse than is being reported. There was a video with an interview with a doctor in China (has now been taken down) ... he said when he came in for his shift there were 120 patients waiting. 40 of them had coughing and sore throat but no fever and so he sent them home. Of the remaining 80, they all had fevers and he selected the worse five cases to admit to the hospital because that was all the open beds that were available and sent the rest home to stay in isolation and self-treat. At the end of his shift he had to fill out an official report in which he reported the number of new cases he had seen: he put down 5, because that is how many were admitted and tested to be confirmed. Multiply that scenario times every doctor at every hospital and you get a sense of how unreliable the numbers are that China is reporting.

 

Very interesting and very good references. If a man made recombined virus were developed as a vaccine for SARS, then the Chinese population who received such vaccines apparently have an over reaction to this corona virus. (Not being an expert at understanding this paper, I am unclear as to the relationship of this n-CoV virus with the SARS vaccine which is also a virus). This means that the epidemic “might” not spread among populations not vaccinated against the SARS virus which would of course be good news outside of China, whose population was vaccinated against SARS, in terms of the potential for pandemics. We will have to wait and see; hopefully the Chinese authorities will be forthcoming in their information. Your cites definitely indicate a strong possibility of a lab created virus (the discontinuity in the graph) and I would tend to believe it was intended created as a vaccine, not as a bio weapon.
