Manila, Philippine Daily Inquirer. May 17th 2013. The World Health Organisation dispensed several posters on Friday to mark World Hypertension Day, warning that deaths due to heart-related diseases will continue to rise if no appropriate action is taken. Hypertension is responsible for at least 45% of deaths across the globe due to heart disease and 51% due to stroke, and is known as the "silent killer". According to detailed studies quoted by Dr. Margaret Chan, it kills 9 million people every year. In the Philippines, it is estimated that 1 in 4 of Filipino adults suffer from this "silent killer", due to their intake of high sodium and processed food, and leading a sedentary lifestyle. The illness is the biggest risk factor for diabetes and, if uncontrolled, can cause blindness, irregular heartbeat and heart failure. Well, thats from the World Health Organisation, but what do they know ? Probably only gasbagging.
My wife's late father who died three years ago, had diabetes, had eye problems, had an infection on his back that needed Cutting out, had three strokes. The last stroke was the final nail in his coffin. Bad diet, rice and fatty pork. I'v noticed lots of Pinoys dragging a leg or an arm unable to raise. Has the family learned anything from this, answer NO. Tatay R.I.P
Jimeve, that is very sad and reminds me of my stepfather. The fatty food and the case or more of beer per day probably had more to do with his diabetes than the agent orange he was exposed to in Viet Nam although he eventually received medical disability for his service related diabetes. More sad that he had a leg amputated and almost lost an arm. I never cared for the man but I wouldn't want to see anyone in the same condition.
Due to raising the prices of cigaretts and alcohol in Philippines, I have noticed just by sitting at blvd tht there's more foreigners drinking and smoking than filos and me putting on weight when I'm in Australia? Actually it's quite the opposite, I'm a big rice eater but I love fruits and veggies more and because they have good quality fruits here I tend to eat that more than anything that's how I keep in shape. Friends have said I haven't changed since I had the baby so I guess that's a good idea but if I stay in Philippines, with all the yummy street foods...there's no doubt that I'll put on weight but I don't drink and smoke :-)
With all due respect sir, if your gonna ask a filo opinion I have no doubt that he/she will say, most of the good filipino food are the forbidden ones to eat. If the fill govt is smart, they should make the veggie and fruit prices cheap and the meat more expensive like what they did to the cigarrettes and alcohol :-)
I guess you have one to blame for that, the church since they are the ones that really refused to implement contraceptives in the philippines :-), but I believe that any medications have side effects no matter how pharmaceutical companies say how safe they are :-)
