My tank sprung a leak and killed all my fish. Been too lazy to fix it and the neighbors would come over and steal my fish anyways. Really wasn't worth the effort with greedy neighbors.

I would love to have some proper catfish but the ones sold in Robinsons are nothing that resembles catfish I grew up eating. Maybe I give it a try and see if the flavor is the same.

Wrye, are you trying aquaponics up there? I have read of several Filipinos and a few foreigners doing it. Have a few friends here near Perth doing the same...(am a big veggie gardener myself). Aquaponics for them not really cost effective yet due to the initial investments for equipment etc....but having good fish and vegetable crops for their efforts, and doing it consistently. One thing that interested me about moving to the Philippines...I could play with that hobby extensively. Barramundi year round up there would be great.....other species to play with too. But if the locals are going to steal them...what's the f-ing point....
The living is cheap...but is it worth the aggravation and general distrust....We'll be making that decision soon...Hoping the economic 'revival' in the Philippines continues to gain momentum and sorts out the crime and corruption issues....but that is a big ask - where both are so prevalent.

If aquaponics is a concrete pond with a pump and some fish food.......then yes, I tried. It was fresh water fish. I could easily have bolted a steel cage on top of the pond to prevent anyone from stealing the fish. That was my plan until it sprung a leak.

Honestly, after treating the water and electricity cost of running a pump you don't save any money from growing your own fish. Will end up costing about the same as buying from the market. But if it's a hobby you enjoy then go for it and at least you will know the fish is fresh. I didn't really do any of the work so I don't know much of anything about it. The helper maintained the fish.

You will likely run into higher operating costs for salt water fish from what I have read online.

Btw: the thieves weren't locals they were foreigners.

Thanks Wrye...that would make me ten times more furious.....
I was planning to go solar/battery to drive pumps....but I can do that here easy enough...and much more sun LOL....
Hard to understand foreign neighbours stealing from you.....lived all over Asia and the Middle East without that problem, ever (usually the exact opposite - we all watched out for each other) but if it's happening there...that is as low as people can go...Very dismaying...

Old miserable farts on their retirement waiting to die. They give their girlfriends full access to their bank accounts and then complain about being broke every month (but their girls are some of the best dressed and accessorized in the city). A bunch of drama queens with nothing to do but gossip about everyone. Can probably find a couple of them at McDonalds every morning.

Solar power can work here. Don't know where you'd get it but I have heard of people doing it.
