    Hi,
While we were in Dumaguete and driving back and forth to the subdivision where our house is being built, I never saw it, but have since heard and read about the open dumpsite in Candau-ay. I also read that they were trying to close it, does anyone have any info regarding the dump in Candau-ay? Our subdivision (Upland Townhouse) is right down the street from Casa Alicia on Dumaguete-Palinpinon Road....is that anywhere near the dumpsite? I was reading that there are many health-related illnesses in Candau-ay due to the dumpsite, and now I am concerned for my husband who has COPD. I didn't notice an odor or anything at all, so I am hoping the dump isn't near our place.
    Thanks again!!!

Is your subdivision close to the Banica River that flows through Dumaguete? The dump site, from what I can gather using google, is close to the river.

Thanks for the info. No, I don't think we are close to the river....but, honestly, I would like to see a map (can anyone get one or draw one for me and post it here???). I only know what I saw driving to our property from Dumaguete City, coming in on Dumaguete-Palipinon Road.....we didn't go beyond that. I do know that the subdivision owner's daughter and nephew are building their own homes in our subdivision (as well as a few other family members and friends), so I would HOPE that if there are any problems in this area they would not be planning on living there themselves. Also, I am reassured, somewhat, that right next door are two exclusive subdivisions....not necessarily a definite indicator, but hopefully a good sign that there aren't any problems in the area.

I think you may be referring to the land fill in Bulago which is almost complete. I do not recall a dumpsite in Candau-ay. I would think you would have more to fear from the smells of any pigary that might be close by since that is quite a ways from the city limit. Are you building near the Absen subdivision?

    Candau ay dumpsite

Pedro, here are some article referring to the dumpsite in Candau ay...I have also found others, so I know there is one in that Barangay.

The Negros Chronicle - News around Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental, Philippines Post Topic Why close City dumpsite?
    http://www.sunstar.com.ph/dumaguete/class-suit-vs-city-govt-readied

and there is a pretty astonishing photo here of a young girl "scavenger" at the Candau ay dumpsite.....very sad photo

I am not that familiar with other subdivisions in the area except the two right down the road...Casa Alica and El Pueblo (I think)

That you really have to consider if you will be living there. I thought you mentioned in one of your posts that th architect or someone involved with the purchase of the land and/or building was a 'family' of your husband?

I am sorry but you could have asked the city planning division and ask what the city would be like in 30 years like that.

But some local people will never notify you. All they need is to dispose their property and get money from it, and hand the future problems to the vendee.

Good luck. Maybe time for you to check what type of soils do you have in your property, the average run-off or seepage per year like that?

My wife built a house for her parents in Candau-ay and we have stayed there several times and this is the first either of us are hearing of the dump and there was nothing in the air to suggest there was. Perhaps unless you live very close it is not much trouble but until you do in depth research and visit each area it is pretty much buyer beware. Obviously it is not bothering your husbands relatives. After you spend more time there you will know if it is going to be tolerable or not.

    dumpsite

Yes, the owner of the subdivision is my husband's cousin.....and we do trust him emphatically, and I read in these articles the dumpsite was supposed to be closed, I am hoping that has happened, and maybe that is why there is nothing new about it and may be why you or nobody else knows much of it. I know everything will be fine....I just tend to be the type of person who thinks too much, and worry, about things and "what ifs".

I used to live in Candau-ay very close to Casa Alicia. I'm not sure if I have ever seen the dump site but I do know of one area off the road which has the look of a dump site though not very big. When I lived there every once in a while I would catch a whiff of something which others who lived there told me came from the dump site but I only noticed once in a great while. I think you will be fine.

Thanks!! That is good to know!! To tell you the truth, the town I grew up in, in Oklahoma, had a taco shell plant, and the smell from that was absolutely horrible at times!! I bet a whiff from the dump every now and then, probably, is no worse than the whiff from the taco shell plant!!
