I have changed oil for my generator before today scheduled brownout.
I asked where to dispose the used oil at the Petron station opposing Robinsons, where I bought the new engine oil.

I thought they would take it back to dispose it properly, but the 4 co-workers having a funny but intensive short discussion finally agreed that I should just flush it through the water drain or "put it in the canal, its good against moscitos".

I don`t doubt it will kill the moscito larves, but it will kill alot other stuff too :(

So is there a legit way used engine oil should be disposed?

It is still shocking to see how many decades the philippines are behind basic environmental protection, and the pure ignorance of locals for that matter.
See also the upcoming discussion about charging money for plastic bags in the supermarkets! :D Ever brought your own basket or eco bag to the grocery? It is quite an experience....

Aaaaah, I need some ice cold San Mig I guess!

I always take my bags into stores like Lee Mart One or Ricky's, I hate that plastic madness here and up to now I had once one of this little guys in blue/white following me through the whole supermarket while I was just ignoring him whatever he said.

But that was once in 9 years here.

Anyway, to the OP. a very valid question.

We used to give the oil to a multicap driver who probably used my old oil the next 50.000 km. I also know that some use it to fire their kitchen.

All not ideal, but better than into the canal. I doubt the recycle theory, at least in 90 % of the oil-change places here.

I think most of the old dirty recycled oil goes to the pedicab owners for their smoky bikes. But seriously, it is a shame, stuff flows downhill into the water the locals swim in and some us dive and snorkel in. We should petition the governor or the mayors to educate the population and protect the environment.

Several times per month we have people stopping by looking for used oil. It is used here for treating coco and other raw materials. At times, we have bought it at several local fuel stations to use ourselves. Cost when you buy it from them is generally P5 per liter.
