Do you need a helper?

Being a helper is probably a good start but remember it is a dead end job and should be temporary. College graduates should use their expertise to thrive. Thus, she should submit as many applications as she can (including the call center). I've heard 7-8k pesos is pretty much the top of the line when it comes to paying a helper and the majority get 2-5k pesos. College is a waste of time if afterward the tools are never used. Read it again. She has graduated from high school, not college.

She is now looking for a maids post in order to further her education. Can't fault her.

 

This was a good subject even if she just graduated high school, college is a stepping stone and hopefully if she gets the helper job she will have the time to complete her education. Truth is, I feel the pressure to make money for the family will make it more difficult to nearly impossible for her to concentrate on her further education. lastly, many helpers find a foreign husband and then they help with all her needs. Very common here, an example is those who think every American is rich because he/she earns such a high salary, usually $10 an hour or so. The reality is by the time those people pay all expenses, there is nothing left over. The reality is, other than a better standard of living, they are no better off than they were in the Philippines. Can't afford to eat out, can't afford to vacation to see friends/family. It takes two persons working to support a household.

What jobs there are in the US right now are not easily gotten by Filipinos. There are many more wanting to go than there are visas available. The visa quota for H1B work visas for the year 2013 was met a month or two ago (no more visas this year). One must be petitioned by an employer, the employer must accept responsibility for them, and submit a pile of paperwork. Employer must have a national tax ID number and be able to show he/she cannot fill the position locally at local prevailing wage, not easy to do when one out of 6 Americans is unemployed, or underemployed.

Their only real hope is to get there on some other type of visa, then...

Here in UK, overseas workers are finding it differcult to renew their visa's, only the ones who became British Citizens are sure to have their contracts renewed. We also have an obligation to accomodate European Workers who are given priority also.
I have a friend a Filipino Doctor who had to resit his exams here in UK before he was accepted and for a while he worked for free to gain more experience in his field here. It's getting harder eveywhere these days to find full employment.....thank God I am now retired.
