If any of you are bonding and sharing with the locals, you must have noticed that they call each other "Joe" as well, it has nothing to do with racism...

When asked what is my name I usually say "Joe", works well and I like it actually. I was not joking when I stated that drinking with the locals, at your own Purok area is a really good thing. The guys I have known respected me and watched my back. When problems arose they treated me like one of them. One time a neighbor had his birthday party and I just came walking in, signing and carrying a bottle of Tanduay....try it and you will become a trusted (and respected) member of your community.

Now if you have obnoxious drunks on the side of the road when you stop for a quick beer and they insist you drink...no

Hello all and thank you for all your replies.. this is quite a spirited group ... For me only a few beers at most and I am OK with locals and expats for now.. maybe that will change with experience if some of these comments are accurate.. Either way I am certain all comments are well intentioned and communication can be misunderstood sometimes when written in short blurbs on the internet.. The first beer is on me... see you in September.. Thanks again..

Rob, I had a little problem getting to read this as you were the last poster. Every time we click onto your name to read the last Post, it takes us to your Profile and not the post. Mainly I guess, as it is an Email address as well as your screen name, maybe you should have a word with Larry, to see what he can do about this. I am sure others, may of noticed this also.

    JP

@ Larry if you are reading this, when Rob makes a last post, the little Blue thing next to his name is not there So you obviously, can't click it, so it just keeps going to robs Profile.

I agree. I have been drinking with the locals for nine+ years, generally 3 or more nights per week. During that time I have had VERY few problems, I could count them on one hand. In any given year in bars in the US I would have more problems than I have had here.

A year or so after I started doing so, a large German Shepard went on a rampage on the busiest corner of Valencia about 5 P.M., the busiest time of the day. The dog didn't bite anyone, but was charging at people and barking. People were frantic, the tocino stand was knocked over, and everyone was running for cover. I kept thinking, "where is the owner of this dog?". The dog ran across the street, and jumped up on a girl of about 10-12 years of age, knocking her down and barking at her face while she was on the ground. That was too much, I charged the dog, yelling and waving my arms. The dog ran up the street, with me chasing it. Then it kept trying to come back down, and I herded it back up the street three or four times, with 50-100 people watching. Finally I noticed a girl at the gate next to the cooperative, I then figured out the dog was trying to go home. I stayed between the people and the dog, and allowed the dog to enter the gate. The dog still lives there, and is still obnoxious.

From that point on, the people had a different attitude towards me. In the very few times I've had a problem with someone, there was a local there taking care of it almost immediately. Once in a while someone will mention the episode, "I remember you, you are the one who chased the bad dog away".

That's me, all right. The ol' bad dog chaser!

    Woof!

LOL, don't click on the name, click on the topic, or "see more". If you click the name, it is supposed to take you to the profile.

maybe, I will ask Rob to do a little test post, so you can see what I mean

I have never heard a Filipino call a Filipino Joe, except for a Filipino we know named Joe. Rony says they usually call each other "Bay" or "Part" (short for partner). That I have heard.

Well since this thread has headed down the road of being assaulted or worse by drinking with locals , I have just received an a4 sized pm from one of the members who is now highly concerned about moving there , and it is a really good note , I really wish that he had posted it for all of us to see , and I am going to ask him if he will , because it really deserves the response of the senior members here , and not just me ( someone who has been going there for many years , but , not living there full time ) , might just start another thread and ask said person , who took time to write this note , if he will share it with the rest of the crew.
