I agree some breeds like mentioned in the previous post, are more kids friendly than other dogs. I should not choose for a Terrier , Doberman or Rottweiler and the like. However for the safety of a 3 year old boy and the dogs, never leave them alone but @least one adult always around to keep an eye what's going on to avoid unsolicited action from both sides. A boy of that age does not have any idea what is wrong or right when playing and even a well known friendly dog can react unfriendly when he/she no longer accept some kind of behavior a harmless kid might do.

I am a firm believer that bringing a dog into a child’s life really adds to what could be a long term love for animals but also a respect and responsibility for their welfare.

I’m stating the obvious, but a dog’s socialization with people and children is so important. I would always recommend a pup you can bring into the family dynamic but adopting an older dog that has been properly socialized is another great option.

As you mentioned, you want the dogs to be primarily outside so I agree that 2 dogs are better than one...dogs are happier when the have a playmate.

    Best of luck

    Shawn

It is easy in 99% of cases to know about a person from what they write about here, how they write it and their responses to other postings.

We have seen some bad ones come and go - one very recently. These are people with little respect for others, for forum members specifically and, quite probably, for themselves.

Anyone who has ever read any of the postings from @danbandanna is VERY WELL AWARE that he fits the profile of a very nice and caring person - it is plainly obvious to see.

Dumaguete Animal Sanctuary has about 50 dogs of all ages, shapes and sizes in need of adoption and a loving home. You might want to consider contacting them. That's what I would do anyway.

Labradors/Golden Retrievers are great with young kids. They are very loving, big enough to scare off strangers yet gentle enough to tread carefully around kids. The only down side that I know (used to breed them) is that they remain at the puppy stage for 2 years which is much longer than most dogs and much longer than my current fantastic dog a German Shepherd. Would suggest you talk to the vets as they would have an idea of the puppies recently born. Noticed some puppies going for shots at Cats n Dogs on St Jose extension recently so that would be a start. The Labs come in black, brown and golden and all have the same loveable personalities.

It is so sad that you feel like you can make comments on my ability to be a good parent to my son .. when you know nothing about who I am... but then the comment really reflects on your lack of personality and your desire to offend while hiding behind your keyboard.... you should really seek help with that

You are correct. He is the OP, and he was the one asking for suggestions. I couldn’t find anything in your response that actually answered any of his queries anyway, thereby making your response a clear waste of internet space. Take a happy pill and stop looking for negative things to say. We already live in a toxic world. Stop contributing to it.

@danbandanna I am recommending a German shepherd, but the purebreds don’t come cheap unfortunately. Good luck with your dog hunt.

I’m a big fan of Belgian Malinois; some people say they aren’t “family” dogs but I would disagree. Then again our’s were raised/socialized with kids of all ages from pups. Fantastic watch dogs as well, I know when we take our big boy out for a walk folks want to cross the street but he is probably one of the sweetest dogs we’ve ever had.

We have 2 mixed breed dogs (one medium and one small) and they are both good dogs, but we got both of them as pups.

    Good luck in your search.
