Went out snakehead fishing with a guest from Canada Mr. Kenny Keepence along with fellow DI member and fishing buddy Dave Cobley and Ja Silvestre. Good times.
@Knowdafish It's a resort with some natural and man-made ponds... the snakeheads here are considered problems by the owners before until we introduced that it can be a gamefish...now this resort in Mabinay is a CnR/paying pond...Dave, Ja and I are setting guided trips there if you know anyone who is interested. The nice thing about snakeheads is being a hardy fish for fighting and CnR handling.
I see. Thanks for the reply. Mabinay is close to our farm property, so I know the area a little bit. I watched the video, but what line test do you guys use? You are correct in their hardiness, as they can live outside of the water for quite sometime with no long lasting ill effects!
Hey Mike, Looks like the water was a bit higher and the fish a bit bigger than the last couple times I've been out there. Did I notice you landing a couple on a custom spinnerbait? Good job introducing some more folks to fishing in the PI. I'll give you a yell before my next trip to Negros so we can plan to get together. Shawn
Hi shawn! Thanks for your spinners they do work well and it has kept our snakehead arsenal always in full, we just modified it a bit by adding long softplastics/grubs and collected the dark skirts from the other spinner/buzzbaits and used them. Seems dark is the way to go in the area, using a jighead/hook a tad smaller could also help. Give us a holler when you are in town again, planning to bring you to Siquijor for some grouper and jack fishing too. Tight lines always shawn.
I never was much of a fisherman even though I tried. My kid on the other hand is a natural. This is one he caught in Alaska when he was 12. We made him reel it in all by himself and it took him an hour and 15 minutes. it weighed 27 kilos! maybe my luck is in Duma. View attachment 8346
Mike, Good the spinnerbaits are working for you. I'll make some more for you and Ja, going with darker skirts and downsizing to 1/4 and 1/8oz. Have you had any luck with the buzzbaits? Those striped snakehead seem to be a bit shy compared to the giant snakehead I've worked in Thailand and Malaysia. I look forward to going after some jacks and grouper and will definitely be giving you a yell. Shawn
