How can it possibly cost 2 million pesos per month to operate 4 dilapidated buildings with no light, etc.?

Subsidies, rent has to be paid to land owner, an increasing amount each year; stallholders have not paid the annual
increase City Hall does. I was told this by a local Attorney.

Ahhh, well just this morning I was lied to at least 10 times by a "local attorney", so I guess I'll take that for what it is worth, absolutely nothing.

The Attorney concerned works in Makati and comes from here, he returns most weekends to visit family, close friend of present Mayor. He has seen the fiscal accounts, when helping the Mayor get elected. I have also heard this from others, I thought it was common knowledge.

This was/is going on over a 23+ year period. Total costs cover rent, salaries, admin costs and maintenance. This argument was used to raise rents in the election campaign by the present incumbent to the business sector, obviously not to the tenants! Another Attorney friend of mine heard the statements being made prior to the election; however after the election told me that he was very disappointed in the new Mayor because one of his first acts was to not increase the rents but rather to raise business tax in town to cover the present losses. Not what he said prior to the election. Not all Attorneys lie. Both the ones I have mentioned are personl beer drinking friends, not business clients.

    Confused!

Well sirmoori, either you are a little confused here OR you are one, of the Land Owners! It is of course, Down to The City to Subsidise a failing Entity that, has a direct bearing on the Well being, of the Population of Dgte. The Land Owners get the Full rent for the Venue, rent from the Stall Holder and a subsidy from the City, this is what a Subsidy is all about, They collect a Tax and spend it how they think Fit. If they raised the rents as well, as the Tax Burden, the stall holders would just raise the cost of the Produce. This would have a detremental effect, on the 1000's of people buying there. Your Curry would cost you a lot more. It is common sense, to keep the rents as low as possible, this will give the man in the Street, a fair deal. We pay Taxes, to support this type of Subsidy. I see NO reason to question it.

I am certainly neither a land owner, I wish! nor am I confused!!
My original point was about Votes not about Food. Successive would be Mayors have agreed that maintaining rents at 1988 levels is ludicrous and that when in power rents would be raised, not necessarily to the prevailing rates. However, once in power, they realise that they would lose a large number of votes so badly affecting their chances of re election. Food does not enter into the equation, it's all about Vote Retention. The same as my earlier point about trikes, the city has 4000++ which is far too many for a small city such as Dumaguete, half that would be adequate; again it is the Vote loss which leads to the proliferation of licences etc.
As for the cost of my Curry prices going up.....I never shop in the Dumaguete Market, so no rise for me!!

Sounds like a bunch of out-of-towners that think they know whats best for the locals but you know what they really want! Actually the locals are pretty smart not to give it to them. To me corruption is lying to someone that was promised something and then trying to take it away to give to supposed friends. That is corruption and it usually doesn't work out so well but that should be obvious.

    Too Political!

 So, what we have here now, is a Thread about Dumaguete, being a good place to live in, that has turned into a Politically Motivated Platform, for rent increases, in a much needed market. (Certainly, by the locals)
If these people need Lies and False Promises to win Votes, maybe they should not, pursue a career in politics, Of course they would never Buy, in this market, their troughs will be full of caviar.
IMHO, there is more to this than meets the eye. For these Attorneys to have so much inside knowledge, can only mean they are in someones Pocket, Not good!
I am non Political, so this is only my Thought and Opinion.

For all that live in the Dumaguete area and have posted on this thread, and for the benefit of others considering the move. I have a few simple question's.

Overall are you happy with your decision to live here?

If you had it to do all over again, would you change anything?

    Have your first impressions changed?

What is the best thing you like about living here?

What is the one thing that get's under your skin and wish would change?

Have any of your personal habits changed?

When you wake up in the morning, how do you feel about the day you expect to have?

    Ron
