Duterte to run for president in 2016

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – If 70-year-old Rodrigo Duterte became President of the Philippines, he would work to make 3 things happen. He counted them on the fingers of one hand: “I would stop corruption, stop criminality, and fix government,” he said forcefully.

Here’s what makes him different: he’s willing to kill to make that happen.

“When I said I’ll stop criminality, I’ll stop criminality,” said one of the Philippines’ longest serving mayors. “If I have to kill you, I’ll kill you. Personally.”

I held his gaze to see if he meant what he said. He did. His track record proves it.

In public office since the people power revolt in 1986, he ran and won as mayor of Davao City in 1988 until he hit his 3-term limit in 1998. He then ran for the House of Representatives and represented the 1st District of Davao City. He was elected to his 4th term as mayor in Davao in 2001 and reelected again in 2004 and 2007. Wow.....he's going to need the entire military on his side protecting him if he wants to stay alive long enough to become president. He's basically threatened every single person currently serving in the government.

DAVAO CITY—Drug pushers living in the city, particularly on Dewey Boulevard, have 48 hours to leave the city starting Monday afternoon, or they will be killed.

This was the warning issued by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte following a command conference with the police here on Monday.

“If you are into drugs, I’m warning you. I’m giving you 48 hours, 48 hours. If I see you there (Dewey), I’ll have you killed,” the mayor said.

He said he knew the identities of the drug pushers there because he had a list provided by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). “Believe me … I’m being candid about it. If I still see you there, I’ll kill you,” he said.

Duterte said he wouldn’t wait for drug peddlers to commit more crimes and would nip them as soon as the 48-hour deadline, which will expire this afternoon, was over.

If after the deadline and the identified pushers still persist, Duterte said he would not care if they were caught selling drugs at the time of a planned operation.

He said that as long as they were there, they would become fair game for the police.

“So get out now. I know where you live. I’ll finish you if you are still there,” Duterte said.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — PDP-Laban has made it official that Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will substitute as the party's presidential bet if aspirant Martin Diño withdraws or is disqualified by the Commission of Elections (Comelec) from the 2016 race.

Former South Cotabato Gov. Mike Sueno, PDP-Laban national chairman, read out the party's resolution on Tuesday (October 27).
