Interesting information……thanks. Before I comment, I just want to level set the conversation. I think we have deviated from the original thread, which was originally about 30 year old living in the Philippines as being odd from my frame of reference (more on that later). Correct me if I’m wrong, but what you seem to be poking at is what percent of expats that I think are 30 years old, although no where did I try to quantify the number until terms like “heaps” where tossed into the discussion. You asked:

What would his age or state of origin have anything to do with his ability to sustain himself overseas?

I still think age is relevant, not because a 30 year old can’t live in the Philippines, but because of what most 30 year olds are doing at that time of their life. Things like having a family, working, saving for retirement, etc. It’s that aspect of age that I think is relevant. If age isn’t relevant, then I guess a 10 year old would fair just fine. I don’t think the state is relevant at all and only mentioned it because those were the specifics of the story. Why do you think they mentioned it in the original article?

If asked for that specific information around the number of 30 year old expats, I’m sure my estimate would be on the low side for several reasons, like my lack of understanding the military component and how the average person has the resources to quite working at 30. Both of which you have educated me on. Even if half of all the expats are 30, it doesn’t invalidate my statement of it being odd for a 30 year old to be hanging out in the Philippines. There are over 2 million men that are 30 years old in the US and probably less than a thousand of them are expats in the Philippines. In addition, you support my contention yourself.

I know many more that are older than that that are retired and living here

It find it curious that someone who makes statements like:

I don't have much faith in my fellow expats. There are a whole lot of scum out there that come to this country.

Wants to take me to task on calling a 30 year old expat odd, when they use terms like "whole lot" and "scum".

I think the challenge here is the relativity of our views. It’s a bit like me saying only crazy people climb El Capitan in Yosemite and you being a rock climber, tell me all your friends climb it and they aren’t crazy.

Now to answer your two questions.

For question #1. I was able to some information on the number of expats living in the Philippines, but as you say that information is suspect because it doesn’t go into age details, if working, retired, student etc. Here is the link.

Foreign Citizens in the Philippines (Results from the 2010 Census) | Philippine Statistics Authority

Majority of foreign citizens come from the United States of America

The largest number of foreign citizens in the country came from the United States of America (29,959 persons). The next largest numbers came from China (28,750 persons), Japan (11,583 persons), and India (8,963 persons).

    And

    https://www.iom.int/files/live/sites/iom/files/Country/docs/CMReport-Philipines-2013.pdf

    Table 10, page 47

Here is where you can look at the US statistics.

    Request Rejected

For question #2, no, those statistics didn't provide the information you asked for.

I like being made to think. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and the time you spend keeping this site running.

Just in case you are wondering I don’t speak German.

I don't have much faith in my fellow expats. There are a whole lot of scum out there that come to this country. I wouldn't be surprised if he is guilty of beating the crap out of the girl.
I don't have much faith in the locals, the reporting and the justice system here. There are a whole lot of scum that live in this country. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a setup to extort some money out of the foreigner.

That's assuming the guy had even the slightest bit of common sense. Women beaters are usually aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

And I hope that if this is a setup by the girl she gets sentenced to the exact same punishment that her victim would have been if he was found guilty.

Surprised a 30 yr old from Mississippi is living here. Perhaps he has a disability pension. Nevertheless, I would not want to be in his shoes. I imagine if guilty and convicted (not sure if both are required here) his new jail buddies will not take kindly to his rap sheet.

I don't track ages. Note that ages are not shown in the member card area under the avatars. Asking for age during registration is a legal requirement in the US as anyone under the age of 13 must have their parents write a letter to the forum owner saying that their child has permission to join. (DI doesn't accept anyone claiming to be under 18 though.)

Google does track the age of the website's visitors though:

Probably not what you were expecting to see. Reason being: there is absolutely nothing stopping locals from visiting or signing up on this website (and many locals do have accounts here). From what I can tell from the member base here; there are just as many people living here as there are those looking to move here and/or looking to take a vacation (that really is just a guess because, as with most forums, 90% of the users are lurkers and do not regularly post). There are more statistics that might be able to help determine this but DI does have competitors (one of them being a slimy German con-man who used to own this forum that is still trying to use this website's name to gain hits on his own worthless copypasta websites) and I'm not going to be the one to hand over the info that would help steal visitors.

As for determining a tourist from an expat from any official statistics coming from the BoI; well, according to the BoI I am a tourist.....even though I have rented the same place in Dumaguete for 6 years, I own several vehicles, I have more personal belongings in the Philippines than in my home country, I spend more money in the Philippines than my home country, etc. There are plenty of "expats" here, from all ages, that are on the same tourist visa as myself. Also, would you consider foreign students as expats or tourists? Or something completely different? Because their are quite a few of those in Dumaguete as well (exact numbers I don't have....and I doubt Immigration makes those numbers public) No matter the case, the numbers you are searching for likely don't exist....and if they do exist you wouldn't be able to draw a picture that resembles anything close to reality from them.

I don't doubt that the average expat here is in their retirement years, that's only natural. I'm just saying that the number of younger expats here is much higher than you think.

FYI: I personally know somewhere around 50 people that are in their 20's to early 40's living in Dumaguete on a permanent basis. I know many more that are older than that that are retired and living here. The vast majority of people I know (of all ages) come in and out of the Philippines at vastly varying degrees frequency. It would be a rather hard thing to provide a graph for as I don't take notes and ask tons of personal questions every time I meet someone.

Wrye83....Playing devils advocate, eh? I was just responding in kind, to the specifics of the the thread. I don't recall saying only 30 years olds from Mississippi seemed odd. You aren't from Mississippi are you? Joking aside. I find any 30 year old moving to the Philippines a statistical anomaly. Sure there are exceptions to every rule and you are probably one of them, but that doesn't invalidate the rule. It's more about the the fact that he is choosing to do it, not his ability to do it. None of us personally know this guy or girl, so it's really all speculation at this point.

Having different life experiences leads to different views on life. How's that for wisdom?

What would his age or state of origin have anything to do with his ability to sustain himself overseas? There are plenty of idiots that have made poor life choices of all ages from every state. I've met many older gents (not from Mississippi) here that I can't believe ever made it out of their mother's basement. Age/Where a person grew up ≠ wisdom.

Well, regardless of his motives or motivations, he ought to be in hot water if he did in fact abuse her physically, OR, if he did hold her and her child against her/their will - or both.

For sure, if the facts of this situation match up with what is claimed, this guy could use a thorough, several day long, psychiatric evaluation.

What does the Philippines do in cases like this? Slap the guilty on the wrist with a small fine, he pays a bit to the offended/family, and then march that offender to the nearest out-bound plane back to that person's passport country? Do they notify the person's in-coming nation of this type of offence committed? Or does the person return to their home country without anyone knowing of this and should he/she have a psych issue, simply re-offend (or worse) until caught?

    ******

Another thought - since you guys have posted threads here related to "Control Queens" - you don't think she set this guy up do you? Like to save face, extort money, to "get even" at him for past grievances, etc?

Or is he a "Control King" who has absolute control over his Kingdom and Serfs?

    Just wondering....

Can you provide any numbers for how many elderly foreigners are in the Philippines? If those numbers exist do they indicate how many of those "foreigners" are actually foreigners? (not Filipinos returning back to their home country)

While in Manila and Cebu I see FAR more younger expats around town than older ones. I see more and more younger expats in Dumaguete every year. I don't believe the number is as small as you think it is. The baby boomers are kicking the bucket and the US (along with many of their European allies) just finished one war a couple years ago and is just now winding down another......their are a LOT of younger soldiers that have gotten out with disability checks and have the financial resources to make a move to the Philippines. It's not just a country for old men.
