The past governments over decades have let the UK down, not just now, IMHO.

    Asylum support: What you'll get - GOV.UK

Just for info...I’ll leave it up to folk themselves to decide worthiness.

However, I’ll say I am proud to come from a community that took in refugees from Spain and Italy in the 1930s and sent volunteers to fight Fascism in the International Brigades before the establishment had the guts to stand up to Hitler or Mussolini. Wasn’t my community that was best friends with Adolf (the aristocracy, the Royal Family, the Daily Mail) before the big show or provided the nation with its biggest set of traitors (Burgess, Philby, McClean). Not unusual to meet someone with a first or family name that’s Spanish or Italian in those parts. We’ve always been outward facing around our parts.

I voted for remain due to the protections the EU will offer my minority ethnic status that are already under threat from Westmonster. That and what I see as the benefits of remaining in, from regional aid to the protection of employees rights. Loads more reasons.

I don’t get, and utterly reject the tabloid whipped up frenzy of hatred directed toward those who have probably suffered forced displacement, torture, absolute poverty and so on. I’ve even got a lot of sympathy for the economic migrant. We had a similar situation in the 40s, 50s and 60s with the Carribean influx...honest hard working folk doing the jobs that often couldn’t be filled by UK citizens, same-same now with Poles and Romanians in our local meat factories and in the fields on piece work.

As to getting the asawa to the UK, we went through umpteen hurdles, spent a pile of cash to get her several tourist visas - and at each stage were scrutinised in great detail as to motive and ability to hold her own financially. Hardly easy, but a d*mn sight more easy than bolting across the Sahara or being held by Libyan slave traders - or the myriad other ghastly fates suffered by thousands.

In short, I feel kinda ashamed at the treatment meted out by government in the UK to its own citizens let alone asylum seekers. It’s why I’m making my home here. I find it easier to breathe and to be human. Just my ha’pporth.

    Cheers,

    C

Wish I could have given you more than 'Genius' Brian for that. You have spoken from the heart the way that many feel in the UK also. I did not even mention that my country is importing present and future terrorists but stopping good law-abiding people coming in. All those who bleat about the refugee situation should go back to their countries and take some into their homes - a kind, gentle, loving family did that in the UK for one man - he murdered them.
