Wish I could have given you more than 'Genius' Brian for that. You have spoken from the heart the way that many feel in the UK also. I did not even mention that my country is importing present and future terrorists but stopping good law-abiding people coming in. All those who bleat about the refugee situation should go back to their countries and take some into their homes - a kind, gentle, loving family did that in the UK for one man - he murdered them.

I live just outside Los Angeles much of the time when I'm not here. It's the same way in LA as Brian and you describe. There are a lot of illegals there and California has made many allowances for them even beyond the generous allowances of the US government. They often can get many benefits as far as medical and legal assistance. If they are there legally many work jobs that pay minimum wage and then get paid an extra amount "off the books" in cash. That way the worker can still take advantage of all the government programs like food stamps and housing because as far as anyone knows he is working for minimum wage. This practice is also widespread in New York City. I worked there for 15 years and know this is a common practice there also. All of the problems with illegals are widespread in the US and cost the system there a lot of money. I think much of the problem is that there are so many that want to be generous with other peoples money to solve perceived problems that they actually have no first hand knowledge or experience with. And of course there is this.
Allegedly from Winston Churchill "If a man is not a socialist by the time he is 20, he has no heart. If he is not a conservative by the time he is 40, he has no brain." – Winston Churchill

    Asylum support: What you'll get - GOV.UK

Just for info...I’ll leave it up to folk themselves to decide worthiness.

However, I’ll say I am proud to come from a community that took in refugees from Spain and Italy in the 1930s and sent volunteers to fight Fascism in the International Brigades before the establishment had the guts to stand up to Hitler or Mussolini. Wasn’t my community that was best friends with Adolf (the aristocracy, the Royal Family, the Daily Mail) before the big show or provided the nation with its biggest set of traitors (Burgess, Philby, McClean). Not unusual to meet someone with a first or family name that’s Spanish or Italian in those parts. We’ve always been outward facing around our parts.

I voted for remain due to the protections the EU will offer my minority ethnic status that are already under threat from Westmonster. That and what I see as the benefits of remaining in, from regional aid to the protection of employees rights. Loads more reasons.

I don’t get, and utterly reject the tabloid whipped up frenzy of hatred directed toward those who have probably suffered forced displacement, torture, absolute poverty and so on. I’ve even got a lot of sympathy for the economic migrant. We had a similar situation in the 40s, 50s and 60s with the Carribean influx...honest hard working folk doing the jobs that often couldn’t be filled by UK citizens, same-same now with Poles and Romanians in our local meat factories and in the fields on piece work.

As to getting the asawa to the UK, we went through umpteen hurdles, spent a pile of cash to get her several tourist visas - and at each stage were scrutinised in great detail as to motive and ability to hold her own financially. Hardly easy, but a d*mn sight more easy than bolting across the Sahara or being held by Libyan slave traders - or the myriad other ghastly fates suffered by thousands.

In short, I feel kinda ashamed at the treatment meted out by government in the UK to its own citizens let alone asylum seekers. It’s why I’m making my home here. I find it easier to breathe and to be human. Just my ha’pporth.

    Cheers,

    C

The past governments over decades have let the UK down, not just now, IMHO.

Just to be clear, I too am in favor of asylum for those that are persecuted. What I am not in favor of is having aliens come into my country illegally or under false pretenses just to take advantage of the system of support. This has become so common that it has overburdened the system in the USA and borders upon being ridiculous as illegals are given more and more rights and privileges. To compare the victims of persecution to the freeloaders is comparing apples to oranges. They are not the same. Asylum seekers are given asylum and are not illegals.
I haven't read anything here that tells me that any previous poster would deny sanctuary to anyone that is persecuted and in danger. What I have read is that the perception is that the pendulum has swung toward the ne'er do well aliens that want to come in and take advantage of the government handouts, and that this has reached the extreme so that a legal citizen's rights and privileges are now overshadowed and outpaced by those of the illegals. The posts I've read seem to be objecting to being taken advantage of and having to take a back seat. It has nothing to do with asylum from threats or danger.

Same is happening in Australia mate...

Australia has been one of the most generous countries for opening their arms to migrants AND Refugees, who have all assimilated and become AUSTRALIAN and shared their Culture with the rest of the country, making it a GREAT Multicultural Country IMHO! I LOVE that we live the life we lead, but be rooted if I will agree to what is happening there now!

BUT: it is the QUALITY of WHAT they are allowing to enter and HOW they enter that now is the problem, they refuse to assimilate, do not want to become Australian unless it is for the purpose of fleecing the Welfare system, to which MANY are coming to do just that! This new influx is pushing for Australia to change to suit them, change their Laws to suit them, change what we eat to suit them, change what we wear to suit them, it goes on and on and on!!!!

WHEN you go to a country YOU are the one expected to CHANGE AND ADAPT! IF YOU think you are going to come and live here in the Philippines and convert Filipino's to YOUR way of thinking then THINK AGAIN! So; WHY should it be different in your own country where IF YOU are accommodating THEY WILL take full advantage of you until you are living in the same sh*t hole they supposedly escaped from! Look at Great Britain for just one example... I have friends who moved to Australia from Britain to escape this scourge!! I moved here to get away from the bullshit that IS going on back in Australia!! Enough is enough ADAPT to your NEW country OR GO HOME!
