It is very obvious they don't care about the poor...but they do enjoy being in power. If they want to maintain that power they will need to make sure the poor don't revolt against them.

You want to add that to your signature block, Captain Doom and Gloom?

Then who is it for? It is of little concern to anyone that is healthy. The older you get the more likely you are too have pre-existing conditions. The primary purpose of quarantine is to protect the elderly. Our society is being destroyed because of a virus that is really only a threat to the elderly.

The frightening thing about letting this thing run its course freely with no restrictions to try to confine it is that the infection rate will probably climb to a very high percentage of the population like, say in the Philippines 130 million people roughly, with an infection rate of lets say 80%, we would have 120 million infected. A very large number of those would require hospitalization! Impossible to imagine the death as a result of that and the aged would be the worst affected with scores of millions dying. Here in the Philippines that would be felt mostly by the disadvantaged but what about in a country like the USA. What affect would that have on the economy of the USA? Frightening to think about it and what sort of world leader would condemn his country to such a fate. There is one, Brazil and who knows what the outcome will be there. And in the USA where restrictions are about to be eased with no proper signs that the infection and death rates are declining?

    1. Your New York data shows the death rate for 45-65 to be the same as my “elderly” group in the next bracket above. That actually surprised me but the data are getting more accurate coming out of the US.

    2. 60+ have higher death rates period, for regular flu and all other ailments. It is not surprising that COVID would be the same; it would be surprising if it weren’t, based on other flus, SARS1 etc.. Actually the COVID “per capita” death is relatively small in all countries. People can say that is due to mitigation but even countries with no mitigation have very small per capita COVID19 death rates. Here in Negros oriental it is is almost nil.

It us simple logic that elderly people as one group could easily be protected by simply only quarantining them and letting the rest of the population go to work. Quarantine originally meant to quarantine the sick (not the well) but that is another separate issue I have. Methinks *all* age groups are equally panicked to a large extent, government authorities hear that and the people, acting like normal human beings with survival instinct care about themselves the most; using the old as justification to continue GQC is as good an official reason as any but, if the 60+ all died off, I think that would not reduce their media-induced panic at all.

I agree with you that we should work on herd immunity; that will ultimately be the solution anyway since the lockdowns cannot economically be sustained until or if a vaccine is developed & made available here. In that case, all age groups including 60+ should protect themselves as they see fit or otherwise perhaps meet an early demise; but don’t let the government try to do that job and use so-called elderly as an excuse for imposing quarantine on everybody. The local Filipino people of all age groups seem to overwhelmingly want to be protected by the government (a false sense if security in the long run), they wish to protect THEMSELVES, not just people who are going to kick off 15 years hence anyway.

But we appreciate the love just the same lol.

Herd immunity only works if you attain immunity after getting the virus... does no one read the reports that possibly there are people reacquiring the virus after overcoming the virus ??? If that is the case then only shelter in place will defeat this if all comply and youth becomes less arrogant.... just sayin

Re-acquiring happens occasionally, at least in theory. What I read is that a very few test positive after previously being cleared as negative, for example, when showing up for donating anti-bodies and being re-tested. But in spite of the fear porn, this does not show up as a major issue because of the lack of dead bodies due to it. In addition to unreliable testing, some theories say that the virus hides in the body, however, they say that it us not dangerous to the person or infectious to others. Herd immunity should work, at least there us a scientific basis to hope. I also suspect similar things happens with other viruses but I have no scientific basis to name that claim; I do have some basis to claim that media would not spoil the scary story if such good news were available.

The two charts are showing different things. The top chart shows the death rate for those that contract COVID-19 by age, it does not take pre-existing conditions into consideration. The percentage shown in the New York data just shows what age groups account for confirmed deaths, not the overall death rate for those that contract the disease. Oddly enough, a healthy 75+ year old with no pre-existing conditions has a significantly better outcome than younger people in the same category. (Perhaps this is because their immune systems have dealt with similar viruses in the past? Or maybe I did the math wrong.)
