There is a very good possibility that I will be coming to Dumaguete in late May. My contract teaching English at a corporation in Shanghai will end at that time. Although it is the best English teaching job I've had my heart just isn't in it.

During my travels over the last few years I've often asked the question, If you could live anywhere you wanted, where would it be? Well the Philippines started to come up so I thought I'd check it out.

A few weeks ago I was in Cebu/Bohol/Panglao and when I asked my question Dumaguete was the answer. I did some research and thought it sounds great to me I better check it out.

So, I'm new to the Website and trust I will be new to Dumaguete in a couple of months.

I'm a spiritually oriented mature gentleman with a good sense of humor who likes swimming, cycling, walking, nature, reading, Qi Gong, and eating more vegetables than meat. I value a simple, peaceful life exploring new places and meeting kindred spirits.

I can also be very curious and will likely have a few questions about settling in Dumaguete.

Looking forward to a new adventure.

    All the best,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,

welcome to DI, you wrote a very nice intro (what is rare). Dumaguete is different in many ways. Dumaguete a good place for simple life with very limited supply of .... well, actually everything.

The City is easy to reach and easy to leave what is a great benefit. Take your time to explore the City and the surroundings, if you can stay in that kind of life you will love Dumaguete.

    again welcome and cheers

    Rhoody

    Welcome tomalh2,
Check it out here. It's not Shanghai but you can find quite some things here to do the things on your list.
Even a lot of weird spirits here

Weird spirits indeed! Sorta like the tuba fermenting in Jelly's palm trees. Hehehe...

DG, I can stand a lot of (weird) spirits and there is hardly a spirit I will throw through the sink.
But that tuba thing is not at all MY thing.
What I DO like (to eat) is the ubud in the top of a yong palmtree, but disappointingly it has no spirit in it's tasty 'meat'
If we have to cut a (young) palmtree I don't need my lunch anymore that day :D

    Hello Jellyfish.
In my USA 'home' town of Austin, Texas they have a local marketing slogan:
    Keep Austin Weird
The point is to buy from local shops/restaurants rather than the big box stores/chain restaurants. Please tell me Dumaguete does not have a McDonalds.
I'll do my best to support weirdness.
    Best,
    Tom

I have a friend here in Dumaguete who also comes from Austin.
Sometimes he can be weird, so thanks for the info. So likely that explains it
Because you insist in telling it to you ......"Dumaguete has NO McDonalds".
But because my dear father learned me never to lie I have to add...."(yet) on the boulevard" :D
Robinsons will soon open (they publish that since end of November ) another McDonalds to fill the lack of the enormous demand for American (read:USA) invented quality fastfood :wink::wink::wink:
The McDonalds sales manager believes that Dumaguete is 'crying' for the exquisite food offers and that KFC, Jollibee, or how all the others are named are far insufficient to feed well this city :D
    Is n't THAT weird ???

Austin is definitely unique and a lot of fun! It makes the night life of Dumaguete look like the middle of the Sahara Desert!

    I like the Texas slogan........

    "Don't Mess With Texas!"
