hi all. i'm new here and this is my first post. has anyone here tried champix to quit smoking?

a friend recommended that i try this drug to kick my smoking habit. i've been browsing the net looking for information on this drug. i read some encouraging stories and some scary ones. now i'm a little confused. i quit smoking cold turkey several times, but when i got stressed out, i would take up the habit again. i'm into writing and i think smoking helps me relax and stay focused (could be psychological, yes) it's been 10 years since i got hooked on cigarettes and would now like a healthier lifestyle. never really had weight problems but after turning 38 recently i've become quite a vain woman :D, putting more effort into skin care and all. i also started exercising weeks ago to stay fit and i'm into healthy eating now (somewhat :D). my only problem is this nasty habit, it's just too hard to break. to those-who-used-to-smoke-but-now-no-longer-do, how have u managed to stay off nicotine? thanks a bunch

Gypsy, welcome to the Forum. Can you please tell us a little about yourself? Are you a local girl? Sorry I can't help you with the smoking subject but hope you find a way to permanently kick the habit. From what I have seen, I wouldn't be surprised on this forum if more than half the members are smokers, so you are not alone.

    Hi Gypsy,
After many years as a heavy smoker I quit in 1989, a New Year resolution. I had tried the gum and the patch and they didn't help. I just made up my mind and then made myself sick everyday sucking on hard candies when I felt the urge. It was just about the hardest thing I ever did but worth it. I still dream of smoking sometimes and once in a while when someone lights up around me I feel the urge even after all these years.
I wish you luck. It's hard.

    hello gypsy
i used chantix to quit 3 years ago..it does work....just be very careful of the one side affect...depression....it was the only one i had ...and it snuck up on me ...didnt know i had it till i took a very long look at why i was wanting to sleep all the time...but back to your question..chantix really does work...follow the directions and have a real desire to quit smoking...the desire seems to be the deciding factor....good luck in getting rid of the most addicting thing in the world..

thanks, kenny and xhippie. i appreciate your replies. tried the patch 3 years ago. was able to stop smoking only for several days. i find it's a lot tougher to quit when i started working from home. i spend much time alone until the wee hours of the morning in front of the pc, working. often i light a ciggie without really being conscious of it. it's like automatic response, like trying to compensate for lack of human interaction LOL. i fared better when i was still working in a formal office setup because then i had to go outside the building before i could smoke and i could only take few ciggie breaks then. now there's more freedom to do that.

xhippie, yes i read that champix/chantix can cause depression. there are even stories of people committing suicide without knowing what they were doing, maybe like they were in a trance or something. i plan to do more research if i can find the time but right now i think the risks outweigh the potential benefits. not even sure if the drug is already available locally. i think i just might try the cold turkey route. i know i have to. someday.

    sigh.

I smoked once, but only after realizing a hot spark from welding caught my pants on fire! After that it was easy to "quit smoking". :D

    Cold Turkey!

Hi Gypsy, Jack P. saying hello, I tried a year ago to quit smoking, failed miserably with all I tried, After much nagging, from Her indoors and my monster, I decided in February to have another go, this time went Cold Turkey, WOW! Shock to the system, so far I am doing well, I feel better, and if I can say so, I think I look better, I have lost some weight, I was concerned I would put it on BUT the reverse has happened. I don't know if Pat, Rhoody, Jim or Kojak even, would notice the difference so I have posted 3 Photos of Xmas 2010, Forest camp 2009 and Sunday this week here in Spain (I am away Working) As I said, it is hard but I feel the Effort has been worth it. I wish you all the best in your attempt.

I tried absolutely everything to quit smoking, I couldn't do it...

But then, I found Copenhagen and Skoal smokeless tobaccos for sale in Manila and Cebu.

For the past several years I have been happily using these. I can breath now and I don't climb the walls anymore when I'm unable to light on up, like on a bus or plane.

I use a very minimal amount, a can last me over 2 weeks, and I'm quite happy.

I recommend highly for those with an irremovable nicotine fishhook in em.
