I have been in RP for six weeks and Dumaguete for last three. My experience has been much like Tomalh2's. My son was here last week and we visited APO Island, Bohol and Panglau (I wonder if we saw you on the ferry, Tom?). My son and I are from US but he has traveled much of Asia and Austalia. As we traveled he kept asking people where would be a good place to settle in RP. Every time the answer came back Dumaguete!!

Like Tom, I had done some research and Dumaguete seemed like the place for me. The presence of Silliman U was a plus. I am semi-retired professor, teach Community and Economic Development and am teaching that course online for my Univ from here...has been challenging and fun.

I am anticipating moving here for Jan to May each year, and returning to my home in Wyoming, USA for June to Dec. If any of you are splitting your time like that I would enjoy chatting with you. My wife of 40 years passed away in 2008, so I am reorganizing and wanted to get out of the cold. I dive, snorkle, learning to sail, swim, hike and dance.

I have been real pleased with how open, friendly and helpful the people are here. I look forward to meeting more of you.

    Jim (JTGoss)

Hi Jim, welcome on our forum.
That's what I call a nice introduction of yourself.
If so many people advised you to go to Dumaguete, it can't hardly be wrong is n't it ?
I live here since 4 years so I can't tell you what you probably want to know how it is dividing your time between your hometown and Dumaguete.
But....I also dive , swim, hike and dance :D:D
So if I can be of assistance .....drop me a line or PM.

Welcome Jim. Once you have spent more time here perhaps with your Economic Development background you will be able to make a learned assessment of how or where Dumaguete may be able to develop economically. Do you have any experience on the subject outside of the US? Do you focus on civil, private or all modes of economic development? Looking forward to some great input.

I do split some time between the states and Dumaguete because of family ties but I currently do not do so on quite the frequency that you plan to. At least you will be missing a good part of the snow and instead getting lots of sunshine and warmer weather.

    HI Pedro,

Thanks for the reply. I have not done much ED in international arena. But we have an environmental institute which does a semester long class on interdiscipinary assessment of the impacts of projects...social, economic, political and ecological impacts. This class does its projects in different countries every year. I am intending to talk to Silliman U about bringing the class here. I am interested in many of the projects going on..like Reclamation Projects.

I would be interested in hearing abut your experiences here and in deciding to move here. My email is jtgoss@gmail.com Let me know if u would like to have a coffee sometime.

    Cheers, Jim Thompson, Laramie, Wyoming.

Reclamation of the seas, fisheries and reefs would be a much needed focus here but almost any infrastructure project would also be needed as the area is still pre-developed.

My decision to move there is simple; family, sunshine and water are the attractions for me.
