DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan. 9 (PIA) -- The Land Transportation Office (LTO) stepped up arresting helmet law violators as it apprehended nine government vehicles and 99 motorcycles in a five-day campaign in Negros Oriental since the implementation of the National Helmet Law on January 3.

In a provincial peace and order council meeting recently, Land Transportation Office (LTO) district chief Roland Ramos said the agency is strictly enforcing the law with the 23 deputized Philippine National Police personnel in various parts of the province.

In its intensified drive, Ramos said the nine government service motorcycles apprehended included three registered vehicles from the Dumaguete City hall, two from Traffic Management Office, two from the capitol, and two from Sibulan government unit.

Ramos said daily operations will be conducted to ensure that motorcycle drivers and back riders are wearing the prescribed protective head gear.

However, Ramos expressed apprehensions that his days are numbered here in the province due to some politicians interventions questioning him left and right on the implementation of the National Helmet Law or RA 10054.

LTO official had told motorcycle drivers and their riders to wear the prescribed helmets for their own safety and reduce the risks of severe head injuries in case of accidents.

Violators shall be made to pay a fine of P1,500 for first offense; P3,000 for the second offenders; P5,000 for the third offense and P10,000 for the fourth offense including confiscation of driver’s license.

Under the law, motorcycle drivers and riders have to wear standard protective helmets while driving motorcycles, whether for long or short-distance trips in any type of road and highway.

Other transportation laws, rules and regulations will continue in LTO’s daily enforcement activities including the operations against helmets without stickers required by law, said Ramos. (mbcn/JCT-PIA 7, Negros Oriental)

One sure way to p*ss off the local politicians is to apprehend their motorcycles! Yes, their "days may be numbered".
