Decided on Captain "Jack" Sparrow. (Friends used to call me Capt Ron) He is an amazingly smart/friendly dog especially since he was always tied to a tree. Spending lots of time romping around with Shadow.

Thanks everyone for the good laughs and good suggestions

    Ai 愛(love/lovely)
花 (hana) means flower, is also read as "ka" but
華(hanayaka)which is also read as "ka" means gorgeous. The name Aika refers to the latter.

I renamed a rescued dog long ago and I found the best name was one that rolled off my tongue easily and sounded different when I said it than when others said it. I just called him Rex and it rolled of my tongue with an emphasis where he always knew it was me. He did not respond well to his name when others called it because he heard my tone rather than understood the word.

I later adopted an askal and called him Lick Lick but again, he responded to the way I said it rather than the name itself.

So the suggestion is simply a one or two syllable name that rolls off you tongue in a way that is distinctive from the way others say the same word.

I have always loved the name "Samson", but never have had the right dog to give the name to. It means "man of the sun" and I associate the name with strength.

Not sure how to start this post, lots of good suggestions I think we will go with the suggested name Jack (named after Jack P) joke! On a somber note my best buddy Bruno was bit by an infected tick over 2 months ago, after a long battle and one hell of a hard fight he just expired an hour ago. I knew it was coming and a good friend had Oso/Jack and didn't have the right place for him and had no choice but to tie him to a tree. So he gave the dog a better home. I watched him playing with Shadow (Bruno"s son with a black lab mother). Having a few drinks so I hope this makes sense.

Here are a few that we considered when we named our male husky (we went with Reacher); Axel, Brutus, Dexter, Hunter.

I read somewhere that dogs respond better to a 2 syllable name...not sure how true that is.

Though I haven't tried renaming a one year old dog, I understand why you would change Oso so good luck. It may be something that speaks about what you care about. My daughter named their Labs Milo, the drink :hilarious: and the female retriever, Kinako, the roasted soybean flour but named the latest addition Ethan, a one-eyed Chihuahua. A drastic change but probably because she loved the tv show Extant. For me, I would name a fierce dog Jack for my favorite Jack Hammer IPA
