silliman university has a 97 percent pass rate for its med school grads taking licensure exams after graduation which ties for 8th place in the philippines. i think out of about 25 schools total.

filipino doctors or nurses immigrating to the US have to take the same exams as US grads wether basic licensure or board certifications. trying to establish some basis for quality of medical care is difficult. for example, a doctor in a poor area who takes lots of indigents in poor health is going to have worse outcomes than a doctor who works mostly with relatively healthy people.

in my experience, all hospitals and systems try to present their doctors in the best light and i would want verification before believing any published statistics. i can tell you that even in major systems with a great public image, people in high places and with lots of leverage go to people with inside knowledge to decide which doctors they will use, and which ones they would avoid.

sillimans pass rate for licensure seems pretty good to me within the phils

By pass rate at Silliman I think you may be referring to nurses and perhaps technicians. The "med school" for physicians has not been functioning long enough. I have yet to meet at doctor at Silliman Med who studied at Silliman Med School.

Totally agree about the doctors fees, sometimes ridiculous and feels like any doctor passing by on the floor sticks his nose in a minute just to charge their daily fee. And said daily fee sometimes is based on the room rate - got a nice single bed room, pay double or triple.

Even with philhealth and additional private insurance we've had quite some unpleasant surprises in silliman when it came to settling the bill. Once we left after three days and flew our toddler to cebu because nobody was able to make a proper diagnosis. Saw a specialist in cebu, two nights in UC med, case solved.

So I'd also say, silliman is OK for the simple stuff, but if you have the slightest doubt, go at least to cebu for a second opinion.

Which Hospital would be best for throat problems?
Had this irritating cough for over a year and coughing up phlegm, now my throat feels like it's closing in hard to swallow.
Had this checked when I had dengue 6 months ago, doctor said no problems or she seemed unconcerned.
    That was SUMIC.

hey jimeve, well the doctor would be more important than the hospital for you i think. do you have a general or family practice doctor? ask them for suggesstions for an ENT (ear, nose and throat) board certified specialist is my guess on what they would recommend. you can probably go to SU/Ace/HolyChild and check their physician roster for ENT specialists for who is available in dumaguete. i would not allow myself to get talked into letting a non specialist evaluate the condition you are describing. if you do not find an ENT specialist in dumaguete city that you feel comfortable then by all means invest in a trip to cebu city to find that person.

i will guess you should expect a chest x-ray and laryngoscopy. they may want to do barium swallow studies with a fluroscope. so much depends on what the first steps find as far as any issues. i wouldn't get overly excited but neither would i delay getting a qualified ENT doc to take a look.

Thanks for the reply, I have been to the ENT specialist for my blocked ears at SU. A lot of good recommendations, can't think of his name.
Hope the sore throats not related to my blocked sinuses, tinnitus and dizziness.
