The last time I stayed at "Obdulias Business Inn". It is the newest hotel in town and better than the Bethel but the Bethel has a better view and Obdulias Business Inn has a better price, (cheeper). You can get cheeper places but you will not get a place any better.
Obdulias Business Inn has a better internet (faster) connect. My stay there was the first two weeks of last Aug. and they will get my hotel business from now on.

Hi dharmabum, I've just returned from a couple of weeks househunting in Duma and stayed at numerous hotels. The Palwa is nice but can be a bit noisy at the moment from the building work going on next door. The Nicanor is also very nice but has no restaurant. Also, both of these hotels have room power that works on the key system. If you go out of the room and lock the door then the power goes off in the room, therefore it's very stuffy when you return. La Residencia is very nice if you get a room at the front but quite pricey by comparison and can get noisy from the activities along the Boulevard. The Bethel is ideal if you are a sterile missionary with pure thoughts or a very rare visiting Amish !!!!!!You've asked for a hotel that is nice, quiet and within walking distance. In that respect I can heartily recommend the Coco Grande Hotel on Hibbard Avenue as it falls in to all three categories. The ambience is nice, the decor is good, the rooms are very spacious, it's a wi-fi area and the restaurant and bar excellent. Pleasant short walk alonside the University into town. Room will cost approximately 1300 peso per night. Their email is cocograndehotel@yahoo.com and phone is (035) 422-1106. The hotel reminded me of the old colonial style of Singapore in the 60's, and as I'm a very young man of identical age to yourself then I think you will find this hotel just right for you.

    Cheers

The Hotel Nicanor has what I call interior rooms, that is, they are not next to an exterior wall. These rooms are well insulated from street noise. On the other hand, they do not have windows, except in the bathroom. That window opens onto an interior hall. Thus you have a choice of privacy or ventalation. Other than that it is the best hotel I've stayed in here.

The Plaza Maria Luisa was quiet when I stayed there, EXCEPT when they were having an event on their top floor event room or someting was going on in the park right across the street. When they are setting up for an event that has a sound system the workers use it to blast music. The management quieted them down as soon as I complained, however.

    hotel recommendation

We just returned from a visit to Dumaguete, and the first leg of our trip we stayed at the Bethel House upon insistence of several friends. The staff are friendly enough and their restaurant is convenient. Enjoyed being on the Boardwalk. BUT.....the rooms leave much to be desired and the noise from the karaoke bar down the street kept us awake until 3 a.m. every morning. Also, we had to pay for internet.
We then went to Bais for a few days and when we returned to Dumaguete we stayed in the Hotel Niconor. Must say this hotel will be where we stay in the future. Beautiful inside, quiet at night, spacious rooms, big beds, very attentive staff, free internet in rooms....this is a QUALITY hotel. Only thing lacking is a restaurant, but you can catch a pedicab and be at the nicest restaurants in Dumaguete within 5 minutes, so it wasn't a huge issue, also we could walk right across the street to Jollibee, ChowKing, and Scoobys. There is also a Mediterranean restaurant next door, but we didn't try it. The cost of the Niconor was also less than the Bethel House!! I can't comment on any other hotels, just the two that we stayed in. Hope this is helpful and enjoy Dumaguete!! We plan on moving there as soon as we can, from Metro Manila.

    Nicanor would be My choice,but..

I've been travelling back and forth to Dumaguete since 2003 and have stayed at all the hotels mentioned above except for Obdulia's, which to Me looks like it would be a good choice too. Above all,if it's the shortest walking distance to a mall and shopping that You are looking for then look no further than the Nicanor.. Simply open the front door of the hotel,{if the Guard hasn't done it for You already} make a sharp left hand turn, walk straight towards the corner, cross the street and You'll be standing at the doorsteps of Lee Plaza and some Clown Who blows bubbles and a whistle really loud,But that's besides the fact. Allow Yourself one minute to walk to the mall {if You walk fast like Me} or 2-3 minutes on a casual stroll. The Hotel itself is very nice, clean and less than a Year old.The staff is very Friendly and is there when You need Them. There's an elevator in the front lobby if You're too tired to walk up the stairs. I've been leasing a house now in Dumaguete for over 3 Years, but back in July We stayed at the Nicanor while Friends were visiting from out of town. Our Friends stayed in a room that had a small window overlooking the street outside and the Scooby's fast food/internet cafe across the street. Their bathroom was very nice, complete with whirlpool tub and separate {see thru} glass shower.Their room had ample closet and storage space,a fridge and a nice flat screen t.v. Our room was almost as nice, minus the bathtub and window overlooking the street. I am pretty sure the hotel has Their own website, but if not,You can check out the link that's posted on the front page of this website. On another note,I've also enjoyed My stay at The CoCo Grande Hotel, although it's been a few Years since I last stayed there. CoCo Grande is also within walking distance of Lee Plaza and many smaller stores along the way,but it could take You a short 10-15 minutes to do so. Having said that,I do have to admit that it's a very nice walk passing not one,not two,but Three Schools along the way:Silliman Elementary,High School and University.. Lots of Pleasant People and Smiling faces along the way. From what I remember, the Restaurant and bar area at CoCo Grande were very nice. The piano/bar area had a laid back casual look and feel to it,although I can't recall if there was a piano or not. During My stay, there was an ongoing construction project downstairs for a future karaoke/cocktail lounge.Hopefully it's finished by now... Either way,at the end of the day,Wherever You may,I think You'll enjoy Your stay.....cheers John.....

You should try Obdulia's Business Inn--very new and the owner is very accommodating. The place is just a stone's throw away from banks, church, marketplace, shopping centers, and it's definitely not noisy in there. It has restaurants too and it gives good discounts to those who are staying for a longer period. In addition, I once met a foreigner who said he stayed at Hotel Nicanor and Hotel Palwa and didn't last more than a day or two because he didn't like the food in the latter and the services in both were not within his liking. He transferred to Obdulia's and decided to stay there for 3 months and has vowed to stay there everytime he comes to Duma.

The Honeycomb is another alternative, but don't go for the "standard" room -- very, very small. Other rooms are much more comfortable, and lthe Double Deluxe (two twins beds or one queen bed) is 1200/night. Right on Rizal Boulevard; walking distance to restaurants, shops, etc. Free wi-fi in restaurant (and it reaches to some of the rooms as well, but not all). They boast having the "coldest beer in town," and personally I will agree. Frost on the San Miguel bottles every time!!
