For that price I would use a hair dryer...spent too many years in Japan and Korea and miss the bidets; if you've never tried one then you don't know what you are missing. Many more options for women...always left those buttons alone. Shawn
Friday pics Work today was mostly tile and taking care of the window openings. Had the package from the US arrive this morning with a Kreg Jig, screws as well as all the hinges I will need for doors and cabinets. It has rained like crazy today, I can't keep up with the rain water collection from the nipa and will add 3 more barrels to that. Was interesting to see what we are getting off the garden area, think we can be OK with 3 barrels there. Going to have to go with something much larger for the second story roof, the wife is really excited about collecting rain water so we need to figure out what we will do for that going forward. Shawn
Saturday pics Not sure what is going on but have to rename pictures to get them to upload...but think folks can get the general idea. Really all about tile and getting all the openings closed in. I think we picked out some good tile for all the rooms, really wanted a rough tile for the floors so we don't bust our @ss if it gets wet...the apartment we rent has "smooth" tiles and I hit it hard walking out of the CR once and it sucked a bit. The original plan was for a ceiling fan in the kitchen, but since I had the wall put in for the light switch that the "electrician" screwed up we went with just a light fixture. I think it looks good and with a 9 watt LED lamp (90 watt equivalent incandescent) and over counter fixtures I think our small kitchen will be bright enough. Ended up getting T5 fixtures for over the cabinets, with the light paint color we went with and the stove fan with light should be good. Need to go to Dumaguete on Monday to pick up the exterior paint (takes time for them to mix). Decided to just buy solid wood doors at Citi Hardware (unless anyone can give advice on a cheaper door at the same quality). Sounds like we may have a pretty full crew tomorrow...and an on off subject question, why is it bad luck to move in to a house in August (heard it today and the explanation did not make sense to me). Shawn
Sunday pics Had 7 guys show up today so we had a good BBQ for lunch with prawns, squid, pork and chicken. A few bottles of rum at the end of the day as well. Got a lot of floor tile done today as well as mud beds for the bathrooms. The window folks showed up to measure the openings and promised to start installing windows in the next 3-4 days. The waste line for the toilet in the MB is off from the wall by 3", talked to the guy about this and he assured me that since I was going to have a "bigger" toilet it would be OK...toilets are standard in my experience so I left an opening if we needed to adjust. The guy is having some medical things with his wife so I will pick up a coupling tomorrow and take care of getting the waste line straight as I can't count on this plumber. The wife and I will head to Dumaguete tomorrow to pick up some exterior paint and the doors. Shawn
Shawn, how is your budget vs. plan for the build so far. Mine was far exceeded due to the cost of wall, gate, drain, etc. that I had no idea of the additional cost.
rain water shawn... we have a rain water system that supplies all of our ''wash'' water needs. i'd be happy to chat with you about it if you're interested. one thing you may want to consider is the pollution here. see my post #53 at http://www.dumagueteinfo.com/board/dumaguete-city/did-you-see-thursday-afternoon-10551-new-post.html norm : ))~
Pat, We are still about where I thought things would cost...tile was much cheaper than I thought; the electrical service (still don't have that) will cost a couple thousand dollars more than I expected. I did not go into this with a budget but had an idea in my head on what things would cost; some things have worked out cheaper and some things are more expensive than I had thought. Taking on building a house here is a hell of a challenge...I walked around today after the workers left and am so happy with what we have done. I started this post to be open and share what has gone well and also what bit us in the @ss...we will put together total costs for everything and I'll put everything on a spreadsheet once we are done. So far so good... Shawn
Monday progress Picked up the doors today (2 exterior and 6 interior) as well as a few other things I wanted/needed. The paint mix machine broke down so we were only able to get two gallons of that; they said they technician would be there to fix it on Wednesday so will have to wait on painting the exterior for a bit longer...with the rains it is hit or miss when we can paint and not much advance warning on when it is just cloudy are going to come done like mad. Work was mostly tile and grout. The kids' paint and tile selection is odd to me, but I think we chose really well for the rest of the house. Shawn
Norm...must apologize as I missed you post, not always getting notifications so I may jump straight to the bottom. Definitely interested in talking. Shawn
