Does anyone have experience how a small dog reacts to a new born baby coming into the house? My dog is one year old and has a pampered life and doesn't like anyone coming into our house except our helpers and in-laws.

That would depend on the particular breed and also the personality of the individual dog. I would watch any dog VERY closely to see how he reacts to a newborn baby.

How is he around kids in general? Some dogs don't like the constant activity and noise of kids.

Hi Pat! Can only tell how it was for us, we found that not changing the Dogs routine was a good thing, If you have always walked Apo at 6, still walk him at 6, After may discussions with friends, family and dog Breeders, all said much the same as KDF. Most Animals have that leader, of the pack Instinct. I was here first, We found, that as we did the day to things, we tried to involve ours, as much as we could, we walked they walked, we ate, the dog ate. Difficult one really Pat, One breeder told us, take something of the babies and let the dog have it to smell and keep in his basket (or wherever he sleeps) One thing for sure pat, I would never leave the Baby and Apo together alone, until you can, 100% trust Apo.
I Admire your Forward Thinking on this Pat.
I sent you some Info ( Ignore the first one Hit Wrong tab Ooooops!)

Our family always had dogs and cats since before I was born, I had two elder brothers, and for all my childhood we never had one incidence of one of the pets going after one of us at any age.
That said, as Knowdafish stated - it will probably by influenced by the breed and temperament of the dog.
My personal feeling is to be on the safe side with your new born. Your dog is a pet and you may consider him a part of the family, but if something happened to the baby(god forbid), you would never forgive yourself.
Sorry, but I would suggest either moving the dog outside until the baby is 2 years old or so, or, give the dog away completely, and getting a new dog when the baby is 2 or 3 years old.

I think you are already a bit doubtful about your dog, because by your own words you state he is pampered and protective of 'his' domain.

For what you posted what a "wild thing" not only with staff-toys that little rat is, it is one jealous little snap...

... and without meaning it rhoode, you seem to have "all negative luck" here when it comes to stepping into something, that alone would be reason enough not to take a change, but get rid of the dog.

Thanks for all the advice. We definately will not leave the baby anywhere near where the dog could touch him, ever. I like the ideas about introducing the baby's smell to start with and keeping the dog's routine. Still, I will watch and make whatever adjustments necessary.
I think we are down to 5 weeks to go and I am nervous as hell. When my son (first) was born I was in the military and only got to see him his first 3 or 4 days then he was 18 months old when I came home, so I missed the infant stage and he didn't know who the hell I was when I came home. At least I didn't catch him calling anyone else daddy. lol
