I can tell you it is worse being a passenger in a car than driving one here. I am still unable to drive so I see all the chaos going around me in addition to my BIL driver making slow and sometimes bad decisions. Lately I just bring my iPad and play Sudoku so I'm not watching the mess and raising my blood pressure.

Rob I agree with you in most of what you say, but as a bike rider for over 50 years, I can say that sometimes driving too slow (especially as a novice) can be somewhat just as dangerous as going too Fast, at low speeds the slow speed wobble can be so very un-nerving to a following vehicle of any sort and their averting actions can cause an unnecessary accident. Many drivers here just do not know how to take avoidance action in safety ( Well as safe can be)

i will term the most successful driving technique here as "Survival Driving." Forget the rules that no one follows, forget courtesy because you will be afforded none back, just try to stay alive. The technique the locals used is "what is bad for you is good for me" driving technique.

Remember there are only "hits" and "misses" here, there is no such thing as a "near miss". No one really wants to be in an accident but they will intimidate the hell out of you if you let them. You can assume that the guy who hits you and wants to say everything is OK, lets just move on has no driver's licence or motor vehicle registration either. Take his picture before he escapes. Ride with all you attention on the road and sides of the road, but NEVER take a second look at the pretty girl walking along the road or you will be seeing her in heaven soon.

This gets a big thumbs up from me. Biggest douche bags on the road IMO. I think there is a number on the back to report bad drivers but they are going so d*mn fast you could never have time to write it or the plate number down (not that anyone at the other end of that line would give a crap anyways). The owners need to learn what "preventative maintenance" is as well.

I guess a good mind set to have when driving here is to think The largest vehicle has the right of way so be ready to get out of the way at all times if you are driving a smaller vehicle. also that corners are cut in any direction to make the shortest route to there destination.

I don't see many accidents myself. On the one hand, there should be relatively few because public transportation is used heavily here. On the other hand, motorcycles are less safe than cars. Though a wreck is a wreck no matter the level of safety.

I walk a lot, which is probably as dangerous as driving. Most of my close calls are from people cutting corners on blind turns. They just buzz around the wall or bush without thinking about what might be on the other side. The worst in the early morning is coming across people who are coming out of the bars after drinking all night. People turning into or coming in from side streets seem to think pedestrians are under different rules of right away since they are more squishy than something made of metal.
