I would not mind but I am not the Picky one but from what I am reading I see I am getting off lightly so maybe I should be Quiet.

For food we spend 200$ or 10,000 pesos more or less per month( we are 2 persons), husband baked our own bread, makes lots of jams when there's cheap fruits. Vegetables and fruits is cheaper in valencia so we save at least 400pesos per month compared to the city price.

If its just for the wifey, my budget is 3,000 pesos. Filipinos are not picky on food, we like vegetables, chicken, cheap small fish and rice. Once, i had a lunch at the filipino street cafeteria near Silliman Medical Hospital, i paid 50pesos for; eggplant omelette, bamboo veg with coconut, small fried milkfish, rice and free 3 little salt less dried fish. The best filipino lunch i ever had in dumaguete, all dish were over cooked but very tasty.

I am th eonly one who tracks the money in the house too, though I have tried very hard to get the gf to do it but she just won't do it. Someone will be getting a job soon to learn what it is like to have to manage their own money.

I have an "other" category for spending.

It is fine to link that type of stuff. Though this might be a good thread to start in the finance sub-forum. FYI, I use Quicken myself.

Shopping at the Public market can be fun it you are not interested in mingling with foreigners as there are few there. I purchase fish there everyday or so for the cats, paying as low at 20P per kilo, for sardine type fish. I am not sure I would eat the fish myself, but they look and smell good. . I have purchased pork there a few times and always like it.. Unlike the Bacong Fish Market, the Dumaguete public fish market has all the prices posted. There is no "skin tax" as I can tell. It is actually a fun experience if you enjoy mingling with Filipinos, most are very friendly and say "hi" when I am there. Try it for an adventure if nothing else.

lol those would fall under my "Utilities" and "Dining Out" categories. I must admit that I am pretty bad when it comes to tracking my own money. Even worse in the Philippines as very few places accept credit cards and Quicken hasn't yet figured out how to read my mind to figure out what all those ATM withdrawals are for.....so my "Cash" category makes up about 75% of my monthly expenditures. lol

We are averaging 2,500 to 3,000 weekly for me, Cherry, our son and niece; as well as visitors a few times a week. Vegetables in the market are pretty cheap (local) as well as fish...being someone that loves fishing I don't care to eat it very often (odd from what the wife says) so most of the meat we eat is chicken and pork. She grew up with fish so that is mostly lunch for her and the kids as I am happy with a simple lunch of ramyen (noodles); dinner is more extensive with meat, rice and vegetables. I insist that vegetables are served at dinner and they have some great local things that I have not had elsewhere.

Obviously this gets tossed out the window if there is something going on and extra guests are expected. I BBQ often, so I am not just stuck on some of the foods I grew up with and have found foods I like that the wife makes and food I have tweaked to the local ingredients so we have a pretty decent variety.

We spend around 8,000 pesos per month at Hypermart (I like it there with a wide variety of foods available without having to sidle up the aisles like at Lee Plaza or Robinsons)

We spend around 3,000 per month at the Meat Shop in Zamboanguita as I prefer to wash the Chicken & pack directly to the freezer ASAP... Same with locally bought Fish.

We often buy the Sardine size Fish & salt & dry it ourselves (at least I know HOW it has been done compared to buying the dried Fish from the Markets o.O
But luckily I am note too maarte & eat 95% of the Filipino foods dished up & LOVE Malunggay in any form even raw

All up shopping at Hypermart & the local Markets in Dumaguete & Zambo for groceries meat vegies & fruits etc runs out to around 12K give or take per month & that feeds the Wife Daughter & I including 'sharing' with others...

Still a LOT cheaper than trying to Shop in Oz for basically the same food items so NO complaints from me

Malunggay is fantastic and we are using it in stir fry as well as soups and other dishes. Have not tried it raw but assume it would be good in a salad.
