Why bother with school here? Because it's cheap?

You have the G.I. bill, right?

My suggestion is to take a combo of classroom and online classes in the U.S. Maybe you can live in the U.S. for a sem and then do a sem totally online from Duma. Possibly even all the way online. There are great online schools which are basically the same degree as the classroom degree, no stigma.

University of Illinois Online Programs (University of Illinois)

UMassOnline - Accredited Online Degrees (University of Massachusetts)

Growing up i used to visit dumagute every other year to see my father and i just love it down there and want to go back!

You are right Erik, I am.
There are plenty dive sites interesting enough, especially for a novice as you are (even with the certification ).
But Apo Island you may certainly not miss.
    Good luck with the course.

    Hi Erik,

Give University schooling a try! I am sure a college education from Silliman U. will give you a good start in the US. Silliman U. graduates do well where ever they are.

There is nothing like actually going to school Campus life is an important part of one's education.

I wonder if some of those guys who dismiss an education in Silliman as inferior have enrolled there ? Maybe they can give it a try, if they can qualify to get in !

Depends on the comparison. All schools are inferior to other schools in some regard. Harvard is #1 worldwide in several rankings but it's probably not as good of a choice as MIT for computer science.

Also, I look more at opportunity rather than the quality of the local schools. I could go to Silliman but why do that when I have the opportunity to attend schools which are higher ranked? If accepted to both Harvard and Silliman, I doubt anyone in that situation would choose Silliman (assuming financial means or scholarships.) This is an extreme example but it's not terribly difficult to get accepted to a world top 200 university in the U.S.

Due to the economic situation in the Philippines, Silliman may present one of the best opportunities here. Erik has a G.I. bill which allows him more choices.
