Seems like no-one knows the future! Big surprise there. The fact that a new extremely dangerous variant could emerge is correct - it has been happening already in stages. Even the very first case of Covid-19 was a variant of something before which enabled it to cross species. It could even go back into other species and re-emerge later in humans.
The fact that a very contagious variant could cause milder infections is also possible (that is the best evolutionary pathway for longer existence).
Anyone throwing away the masks just yet is unwise IMO - they may be even more necessary quite soon or it may be possible to store them away for the next pandemic (2120?).
But if we worry too much about this then why not worry as much about all the other potential dangers - or just accept they are all just possibilities and we cannot do much about them anyway. Have another glass of wine.
