Hello all. I am excited that I have found this site. I am thinking about moving to Dumaguete in June. I will be making an exploratory trip this coming January.

My name is Michelle and I am 32. I am the daughter of a Filipina and an American GI. I grew up living the military lifestyle and I am now ready to get to know my mother's country a little better. I plan on staying for about a year. I have so many questions!!

I think I have a place to stay as my uncle has a duplex and has agreed to rent me the other side. So one thing down. I am planning on attending Silliman, as I am always eager to learn. I know I will be considerably older than many of the students. Will this cause a problem? Your honesty is much appreciated. Also, as silly as this sounds, I have two dogs and was wondering if bringing them with me would be a big mistake. Again, honesty would be appreciated.

Thank you to anyone that would be willing to help out. I look forward to meeting new and interesting people on this site and in country. Thanks again!

Hi chelee, welcome to the forum of nice and gentle people. Is it going to be your first time in Dumaguete, if you make the trip in January?

I have been once, but it was almost twenty years ago. I don't think that should count as I remember it, but it not pay attention enough to really retain anything. I am very excited, however, as I have heard so many great things.

    Chelee,

I am so EXCITED for you! Good for you being willing to explore your mother's country. I have heard from so many others about interracial couples with kids and it is so SAD that the kids NEVER explore and get to know one of their parent's country especially when it is the PHL. I have heard others say how the kids will refer to the PHL in a demeaning way and think there is nothing to offer. It is certainly tragic since so many foreigners are loving the PHL and especially Dgte.

So where do you live in OK? I live in Springfield, MO. I volunteered in the PHL for 2 years (in 2006) and have been going back and forth volunteering for over 13 years. I would love to find out more what your plans are for the PHL and hopefully help you have a GREAT time when you are there. Please feel free to contact me personally and I will give you my cell # & yahoo address.

If you are looking for HONESTY.......hehehe.....I am certainly HONEST about things. I think when we talk (and you are close enough to visit me too for the weekend) you will understand a bit more about what we have in common.

I had been considering going to Silliman too and even at that time went to get the forms and everything........anyway......long story........

Welcome to the forum chelee. I'm not from Dumaguete but I find this place haven to stay. We've been there last year and we just love the place. Nice thing about Dumaguete City is that, altho' it has embraced the modern changes of time but it still has some interesting history behind its name. And we definitely consider Dumaguete to retire.

Wish you a very pleasant stay in Dumaguete and I know you will love it there as we do.

Thank you for your kind words Chrissar. I am very excited, but also nervous. I have a life here in the States and it is scary just to leave it behind. This is an opportunity I cannot pass up, however. I love exploring new places and meeting new people. There is something to be said about sitting down with a stranger over a meal and standing up as friends.

    Hi Chelee

    Hi,

Dumaguete is a lovely place and I hope you have a great time.

I was a bit concerned that you were thinking about bringing your dogs though. Stray dogs and possibly rabies are a problem in Negros and unfortunately you have to bear this in mind!

    Best wishes
    A Romany

Thanks for the advice! I have had a couple people tell me this so I am going to have to think long and hard about what I am going to do with the puppies should I move.
