⌛ Introducing myself

A good day to all of you,

I'm from Germany and registered in this forum because my wife and I want to visit Negros in november.
We will stay for four weeks and hope to explore Negros and the neighbouring islands. We are very interested in historical and cultural aspects of the Phillippines but also in traditional food. I would be very glad if some of you could give me some hints of what the "must see" on Negros are. But also what restaurants with real philliphine food are good and you can recommend.

Good day to you and welcome to the board. I'm also new to the island and just learning my way around. For me I find the best way to explore is to get on a motor bike and just ride. And don't forget your camera.

Welcome to DI. I take it this will be your first Visit? I have no recommendations as all tastes differ, All I will say is 4 weeks is a fairly good length of time to savour what ever food you like. Eat at a different Eatery each meal, there are plenty and soon you will get a feel for the City and surrounds. As you walk, the History and Culture will become apparent. I hope you enjoy your time in this fair City.

hi, thank you for your kind replys.
that was basically my plan, to explore the city and the surroundings by bike or car and then also hiking.
but isnt there anything that is like a "highlight" in your city?. for me it is important to visit places that are not the "normal touristic spots". what i mean is crowded places, i like nature and I'm always interested in things that locals do. that was why I mentioned food, locals often know "secret places" where you can get the "real" traditional food.

well, the food tradition in the PI usually does not go much further than deadly overcooked meat and vegetables on the burner in eateries since very early morning ...

This country is not really known for the food, isn't it ?

But there is always a Balut at the Boulevard

Xmas House.

In November late, you may just catch the early Days of the Xmas House Lights, world Famous now, Google it, Xmas House Lights, Dumaguete! For the Nature Try Forest Camp in Valencia, Not sure what Food they do but again they have a Web site. Hope all the answers are giving you some ideas.

rhoody thank you for the links, I just checked them. Some of the food pictures take a while getting used to, but some look quite interesting and harmless ( so that I can have a try ).
I also wanted to thank jackpeterson. I googled xmas house lights as you suggested and it is really incredible. My wife was a bit sad that we are on the phillippines during the pre-christmas-period and miss all the lovely christmas fairs. But after looking at these house lights, I really think we dont need to be disappointed because of missing the german christmas traditions, the phillippines will make that up.
I also googled that forest camp and I think we will have a look at that when we do our tour to Mt. Talinis.

Thank you for your suggestions! If there is anything else that comes to your mind and is worth a visit, I would be glad if you post it.

For food, go to the market (tian-ge, local term) located in Real st cor Colon st
1. Dinugu-an ( pork or goat organ meat cooked in blood)
2. Paklay ( sauteed goat organ meat)
3. Halang-halang( spicy local chicken broth)
4. Lechon ( roasted pig)
5. Balot (duck egg, eat first and find out)
6. Tinapa-an with puso( grilled baby tuna with rice)
7. Ginamos (salted anchovy, eat with your tinapa-an)
8. Kaldareta (goat stew)
9. Balbaco-a (broth, available in the afternoon around 3pm, local viagra)
10. Tuba (local drink, Lapu-lapu's(chieftain) favorite drink)

 

Balut??!!

Really??!! Someone sells balut on the Boulevard?? Do tell me what to look for!! Have been trying to find some balut for my husband for a year and haven't found any, yet!! Thanks!!

 

you get Balut at the Boulevard across Coco Amigos,around Cangs and the Market, . If you just stop at Quezon Park, the Cathedral, even outside Ricky's across Holy Child and ask some local for Balut, they bring you a vendor in less than2 minutes.

Balut-vendors are also walking through the streets in different Barangays shouting what they think sounds like "BALUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHT".
