I just repatriated (forward to the past). Born in Manila, grew up in Bais Central and in Dumaguete. Now back to my old roots after 40 years in the States (28 in L.A., 12 in OKC). Came back as balikbayan in 1973, stayed 6 months. Dumaguete is not what I envisioned returning here now. Glad to be back, and staying on for good. Lots of old friends and relatives. Glad they still remember me. Mug never changed I guess.

    Tuba

    Hi Jack-

In the 70's I can hear the beating of bamboo containers when they harvest tuba at dawn. This makes me awake as a little boy, I'll go out and look up on coconut trees. This was one of my memories of Dumaguete.

I wonder if this is still a familiar sound at dawn.

Since you open this topic Jack p. Let me refresh my memory. I have seen 2 dead COELANCATH in the market next to big scale. Nobody knows what it is. Now I realized how fortunate I was just by touching it. That scene will stay on my memory forever. One was dark gray, and the other was light brown. One AETA, don't remember if it was a she or he and not sure if it was for sale (I'm sorry if I offended anyone, not my intention), I was too young to remember. Wild animals for sale, monkeys, ticarole, ehalas manok(wild chicken), maral, parrots etc. Big sea turtles are butcher almost every day for food. This is late 60's and early 70's in the market.

    Life goes On!

 I arrived here in dumaguete in 1990, fresh form military service, I found the area so relaxed and tranquil it was unreal. To-day of course we can see and hear such a difference. I think you have to think about where it was you were at the time you are thinking about. Lower Batinguell has not changed much over the last 20 Years TG. The bamboo trees are still there but not harvested the same way, commercial enterprise has surely taken it's toll on that. The coco nuts are in the same domain, commercial. Gone to some degree are the days of the youngster climbing a tree for 1 or 2, except on our plantation, we still have a couple of the Nephews that will scale the tree at Lola's request. Please understand! I am not casting doom & Gloom here, just saying it is where you remember it that counts. my Daughter was only asking my wife last night if the siren sounded at the boulevard when she was 10. My wife's answer was " We did not need it then " can you remember this my friend. I do hope you have a happy reunion with Dgte. maybe we will meet up one day and have a beer or a Coffee.

    mmm OUCH!

 A little before my time, I asked my wife about this but she was a little unsure what I was asking. She certainly remembers her market days with her mama and yes it was full of things for slaughter. As a child of course her main concern was " ARE THEY PETS " or words to that effect. For the COELANCATH, I guess local members here will be able to tell you. Josephen I feel will react to this I am sure?
Whatever, I am at home here in Dgte and if things do change, we must adapt and change with them.

Jack, I would also like to try Tuba if there is any when I get back there. No not a bamboo harvest but by collecting their bamboo containers (for the tuba) on each coconut trees the harvester would beat the replacement container (to clean). These are the sounds at dawn, and coincidentally our place is also in Batinguel.

I was surprised last year that our place was surrounded by subdivisions. I have plan to visit Dumaguete before the year ends.
