I really enjoy this site and am a member of many other forums dealing in a wide range of topics. I also maintain websites of my own. One thing I appreciate is a well moderated and updated forum. However, I do not see this occurring here. If you do something it only makes sense to do it correctly and if you don't have the time yourself, then appoint moderators and other administrators that will keep the site up. Case in point the home page and specifically local news. If you are going to have local news then keep it updated and if not, REMOVE IT. Nothing is more of a turn off to potential new members than seeing news that is at least 5 onths old and calling it news. I have relayed this many times to DANE but, it has fallen on deaf ears. Any other opinions on this.

    I agree fully with you.

Nothing is so bad as a site with no hart
A hart means that you can feel that they care abut the site and they do everyting to keep it updated.

If I want news I'll read the online papers...otherwise - have to say this is the best Philippines forum site I've seen - by far. Thanks Dane for all your efforts in creating and maintaining this website. Other cities in the Philippines have nothing to match this site. Well done - and much appreciated.

Okay, I'll bite. It seems to me that this forum is doing very well in its' own right, many of the people police themselves, and the site is very active, and each and every member, thus far, contributes, if just in an intro, or going on to sharing their thoughts and excellent photos in an active way on this forum, and I've yet to see any new member complain about the news section, and phil, if you have moderated some other sites, then you know better than most that a site such as this is always in development and improving upon itself. You also probably know that this particular site has the best of everything going for it and I'd bet the members would all rate this site very high. The site is laid out in a very easy comfortable way, better than yahoo group forums by far, there are no advertising spread all over the place, and anyone of us can post news on here, in fact, I just did yesterday in regards to a quake....so I guess I'm missing the point of your comment??? The forum seems to honestly be moderated in a well balanced way, even when Dane is having electric power problems, the moderating is still done very well. We'd be hard pressed to find a site better than this one.

Maybe Dane should post a poll on the front page and see how the ratings are, just out of curiosity.

    Other subtle issues

It is not just with news it also has to do with threads and people not staying on subject track. There are a number of threads that have the same posts because people go off on tangents and the thread takes on a new identity nothing to do with the original thread and news ones have to get started with the original subject. Case in point Architecture. This is something a moderator would keep in control and remove posts that were not germaine to the thread. Things like that. Also contributions by wayward member need to curbed and censored if needed. This is not a dictatorship but there needs to be better democracy.

Bottom line stay on track with your thread. Moderators do your jobs and if you can't do it properly then don't.

    Agree to Disagree

    Hi,

I guess we both just disagree with how this site is being handled. You view it as being mis-managed, and I view it as what the members are wanting, or we wouldn't be here posting. What you call as going off on tangents, I would call a conversation being fully explored in a normal fashion. We simply are free to express on a topic, and if we move away from the orginal message, then it is something we, as members, have chosen to do. To police that and delete messages that are non-offensive, yet off subject would be moving into some unhealthy control issues wouldn't it? I hope my developing impression is wrong, but you seem to be knit picking a bit with someone who has solid success with this site and I'm not sure why you'd want to do that?? What is it about the site that is going well for you, just out of curiosity? What brings you back to this site and causes you to contribute? Better democracy, something you mentioned, is actually what has developed here in this site hasn't it? It seems as though, through the members choice, we've been able to decide on how far off topic we go and when or if we bring it back, that seems to me, to be democracy in action doesn't it? You do bring up some good points but it seems as though it is just a matter of preference, right? Some like the way the site is moderated and some don't, but we probably both agree, that on the whole, this is the best site for representing Negros Oriental, right? I just hope your not trying to provoke a negative response from a moderator? Something like that wouldn't really be healthy for either party. For me, I kinda like a bit of foolishness as well as sliding off topic at times and also picking a bit, to read about other peoples thoughts about their views and experiences, and I hope that wouldn't change, in fact I personally hope nothing changes to much from what it is right now. I'm kind of surprised others haven't weighed in on this topic?

I think the positives of this website far outweigh the negatives. I'm here for the forum and have found this one to be the best fit based on what I'm looking for. Most of the members here have been great and provided me with very valuable information. So much so that I'm beginning to feel like part of the community even though I've yet to make a permanent move. Were Dumaguete Info not here in the future I would miss it very much.
I appreciate that Dane does this as a hobby, not a full time job. Were it a job it would be chock-full of annoying ads and requests for donations.
My deepest appreciation to Dane for providing this FREE service.

You're right Tom, people should express their opinons about this topic and I for one, know that this is the best site I have ever encountered for ease of use and subjects discussed. As for moderators, perhaps the Dane feels that we are supposed to be adults and be responsible for our own behavior and comments. I feel that when we have proven him wrong, his intervention was timely and prudent. I know it's been long in coming Dane but thank you for your tremendous effort and time invested in keeping this site running. And thanks for keeping the site FREE.

    Chi Town
