I bought an ASUS - worse laptop ever.

I bought it for my wife but she is too sharp for that and soon acquired a MacBook!

So I, being the most cost and environmentally concerned in my house, used it. The ASUS keyboard stopped functioning fully after about 3 years and I used a USB plug-in keyboard instead. Then the trackpad failed and I used a USB mouse. Next the hinges broke and I fixed them with short bolts that went through the casing (function above looks, as I said to my wife!). Finally, the screen developed a fault whereby about a third of it was covered by a patch of black/white/other colours - if connected to a TV the whole screen could be seen (and I could access the hidden part by temporaily changing the view of the screen), so it must have been a physical defect of the screen layers. In fact, I am sure I damaged it whilst holding the screen too tight whilst fitting the new hinge bolts. It is now about 6 years old and mostly retired. I might use it to connect to my TV for watching movies as the hidden screen problem is not an issue. (EDIT: I now recall that the SSD went too! I never usually meddle with the insides of my laptops but I found it very easy to replace by following YouTube). But would I risk buying an Asus again? No.

I also have a Lenovo that is 10 years old and has a keyboard issue too - a few keys do not work all the time. But other than that it has been very good - especially as at one year of age I dropped it on the tiled floor of an airport.

My newest is a Dell and it's okay - problems I have are due mostly to Windows and, as I spend days before using a new computer deleting as much Microsoft as I can and downlaoding alternatives (especially for security), I cannot be arsed to reload Windows.

But as @Show Pony stated a while ago - best not to buy laptops.

I partly agree with your opinion when it comes to the ASUS laptop. My laptop in question isn't a good example of a trustworthy one. However, I have still another ASUS laptop (17"), Windows 7 from 2012, so will not go online but still perfectly working to watch a movie when too lazy to choose for another device.
The only thing, the battery has to be replaced, but who cares, in this country with electric power supply guaranteed 24/7 no need (joke).

My best buy is also a MacBook from 2014, ever since up till now not even one minor problem.
Nevertheless, I am not a real Apple fan coz with 3 successive iPhones of which the last 2, I had more problems than I ever had with Android phones of various brands. For me iPhone is a non-goer for always. For the bottom price of an iPhone I can buy 2 or 3 or 4 Android phones and my experience all working even after 5 years. What can happen is that the OS on a specific Android phone is no longer supported and thus not safe and accepted for online banking and more.

The choice between a laptop or desktop is rather personal. As for myself I will not decide to go for a desktop again in spite of more advantages.

Yes of course that choice is personal. For me however, when I'm home I have no need to move around while on the computer, so I still favour a desktop setup. I replaced my then 10 year old desktop 3 years ago (Lenovo Legion T5) , and the monitor two years ago. I have a 32" Samsung monitor now, nice and big, so I don't even bother to watch videos, films or live tv streams on the television anymore.
I do have a small lightweight laptop (Toshiba 13.3" Dynabook) for when travelling, but often don't even bother to bring it.
