If i understand this right, the two were the owners of the resort where they got kidnapped. How adventurous to run a business in such an area, where it is warned everywhere to stay there. I do not understand how people can ignore the danger. Sorry for the guys.

They also owned 2 schools in the area and had been there a long time but recently the mayor had warned them about being there and to be aware.

Still are kidnapped and no leads or ransom has been updated anywhere. But Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana of the Philippines is also talking to British Official Offices now, so some added pressure hopefully can bring about some results. It is more strongly felt that this could be a revenge for ransom or extortion in regards to some fired employee's that worked for the couple.

The gunmen who abducted a British national and his Filipina wife are believed to have demanded 50 million pesos (almost U.S. $1 million) in exchange for their freedom, a Philippine military official said Thursday.

This came as the Philippine Coast Guard announced it had deployed its anti-terror unit and a high-speed boat to beef up the military’s search-and-rescue mission in the porous coastlines of the Zamboanga peninsula in the southern Philippines.

“There were un-named groups relaying the demand … amounting to 50 million pesos

Getting kidnapped for firing somebody, wtf.

This is simply not the country for running any kind of business as a foreigner, unless you're willing to invest in dedicated security staff and put yourself behind high walls most of the time.

I think as a foreigner it's best to see the Philippines strictly as a playground / place to spend money (but keep a low profile

This is probably why most wealthy Filipinos do just that. They know better, it is the foreigner and occasional FilAm/OFW with rose colored glasses that refuses to understand the true nature of the country and extremely poverty and desperation.
