When in Australia we speak only English, unless my wife is on the phone to Philippines. Even among our friends in Oz, the Filipinas married to Aussies there, speak only English when we are all together. When we are in Phil, my wife speaks Visaya or Tagalog, or Ilonggo, or whatever to her friends and family there, and I do not have a problem with that at all...........I lived permanently in Phil with her for some years, and still did not worry about them all not speaking English, because most of my wife's family cannot speak English anyway...........The lady is also fluent in Spanish, and Arabic, and Malay............I just struggle along with English,...............lol
..........or should I say Australian.........lol...........
.............when in Phil, I let my wife do all the negotiations with Filipinos, and pay all the bills and handle all the problems that require communicating with Filipinos, less hassle that way, works for me. I do not have to be in control at all times........
..........I trust my lady, and she is very competent, and reliable.

An idea to consider. Get an erasable chalkboard or chalkboard and put a few words or phrases in both languages. Maybe 10 total and both family and workers learn them in one month and speak to each other. Helpful words like: Do you understand? Please bring me a glass of water with ice. Now. Later. I am hungry. Anything you would like them and yourself to learn. Or use it as a message board. You write it in English, your wife translates it. It does get frustrating, you have to be the teacher.

Just as a finish maybe as there has been not a late of late. Yesterday ( Well last night) as it is Fiesta time in Northern Junob, we had some Visitors come late on after we had all been out for a meal. the Visitors had come to look at how the house was progressing. As my Wife was showing them around she had to come to me on Quite a few occasions to ask for clarification on a few things, I sat at my Work station as the conversation was of no use to me as they were shown around. One of the Wives remarked how patient I was with all this, to which my Wife looked at her a little astounded. She asked OH! Why do you say this. Well Corazon if you spoke in English instead of Bisya Jack might take more interest in what we are doing. I have noticed that you always talk in our language even at home then Moan because you have to say it all again to him in English. If you spoke in English all the time at Home there would be no Problem. this is from one of her oldest and dearest friends. Enough said I think!

Let them prattle on but what really gets under my skin is what happened at a Globe office a couple years ago. Went in with the wife and asked some question to the young woman. She completely ignored me and proceeded to address my wife while she tried to translate. I put a dead stop to it and politely explained to the woman that I was the acct holder and I was paying the bills so I would appreciate if she would address me directly in English or get someone who could. She wasn't very happy about it but she did.-

Completely understand where yous are all coming from, I felt the same way for a while, sometimes still do.....But we have to remember that we have come to their country, so I think the onus is really on us.......I have heard it plenty of times here (aus) and have said it plenty of times myself, if you want to live in aus you should learn the language before you come here..... so I can understand their point of view....

I Am not an insecure man by nature, maybe a moaner at times and as with many of us, the provider of much the majority of income into the house.
I am however having a few problems since we have got our Live in helper. A pleasant and reliable, upper 30+ and I have no bones to pick about the output of Work at all but I can't get Azon or my Daughter to understand that I am beginning to feel like a Stranger in my own Home. Being a Prisoner is one thing through the day (As I don't Drive anymore) and how many hours should I ride my bike daily? but both the help and my workers(Painter /Gardner etc) even any visitors through the day just talk among themselves and pay little attention to the Mr of the House. Then when Azon gets home it is all Blah Blah and then I have to ask for translations. I don't want it to get to a situation where decisions are made and I am not informed or consulted, I have heard of instances just like this.
This a little rant as It am getting pretty frustrated by it all, Like the French, they can Speak English good enough for the needs of the day but don't
Any Ideas, Advice for this normally happy ChappieAnyone?
