Hi guys, you know how it is.....you get older, put on weight and before you know it, nothing seems to fit you anymore. OK, I'm travelling light (sort of speak ;-) also due to the prohibitive air fares, these darn airlines must be making millions.... The idea is getting what I need wearing in Dumaguete, easier said than done. The big question is...where can I find clothing for shall we say a "masculine" jelly bellied, six foot long nose? That's a challenge for many expats I believe, judging from what I saw around ;-) Any suggestions anyone? Cheers.
What size? 1X? 2X? 3X? I'm 6'6", 260 lbs., and am between a 1X and 2X. If you're "only" :D 6' tall you might not have a problem with shirts as long as you are not too wide. I had a problem with getting them wide enough AND tall enough, so I brought all mine, with the exception of a 3X barong, and black denim pants that fit me PERFECTLY!:D The same thing goes with shoes and socks if you wear an "oddball" or long size, and don't want to wear sandals all the time. RTW is everywhere and cheap, and since it is imported stuff, one can surprisingly find odd sizes and nice stuff if you are willing to work at it.
Finding the right size !! I am sure if you take a pair of shorts ETC to a sewing shop after buying material then you can get anything made. I did this for my hubby in Sri lanka so i am sure its the same here. I think there are a few material shops, in Thailand they used to have EXport shops which had all big sizes. Best of luch Di
U.J., very hard to find,if not impossible, any 2X in Dumaguete, I have to shop around Cebu Ayala Mall to find. The 1X they sell shrink up badly and you can't truly trust the labels. I only weigh 193 but can't wear the 1X here. There are some big dudes living here so maybe they have found a place we could all shop. As Naropa astutely mentioned, there are good seamstresses and fabric stores here so you can get shirts and trousers made without too high of an expense.
Large size clothing Yeah, I'm a modest XXL or 42 in british size at the waist, I remember not so long ago being a size 34, then I met my wife of 25 years and you know, lechon, adobo, pancit.....too good to resist, not the quality but the quantity.... no Mac Donald or KFC just too much of the good food. Anyway, I agree with not trusting what the labels say, I'll probably go down the route of having something tailor made, never been to a taylor here in the UK, far too costly so it's gonna be a first one for me ;-)), the only bother is that, as anything in the Phils, it takes ages to get sorted and I do not really fancy spending my holidays going back and forth for a darn pair of trousers!! Keep me posted though if you hear a tip on large sizes shops, come on guys gime me a hand here........ Cheers.
check the flea market..my wife found me a cou[le of 4x shirts that were the right size toi wear...at home i wear 2x or x and they fit...the sizes are not very true to the reall world...good luck finding clothes....by the way the shirts were in good to excellent shape ...sent them to the laundry just in case'''xhippie
Do NOT rely on the actual size numbers here as there are no standards. You can go to a store and pickup a 4XL shirt and next to it pickup an XL shirt, hold them shoulder to shoulder and they'll be the SAME size. Same goes for motorbike helmets...I found a 2xl and it wouldn't even go on my head. Next to it, a standard XL, fit like a charm...
Dickies has accurate sizing and carries 2X. Robinson's Dept store carries them as do some of the stores in Lee Plaza. In general, filipino sizes run 1 size smaller than normal, but not so with Dickie's brand. Robinson's Department store will let you try on stuff and has fitting rooms. Again, RTW (ready to wear) is everywhere in Dumaguete, especially on weekends, and at the farmers market in Bacong. It is the pile of clothes everyone is selling on the sidewalks on the weekends. In numerous cities in the Philippines, there are even stores that sell it. It looks like folded up or hung up used clothing that is imported by the bale, but in reality it is a mixture of new, close outs, and good clean used that is imported. A lot of it is name brand. I've seen real Nike, L.L. Bean, Wrangler, Levi Strauss, and numerous other popular name brand stuff that is sold in the U.S. (not the Chinese knock off crap!) go for 35-100P !!! Oddball sizes too! Since most filipinos don't wear the larger sizes, it is just sitting there for a large size foreigner to buy it! I know of some well to do foreigners whose wives buy them mainly RTW and find some really nice stuff cheap! Most women love to shop, and they can have a ball shopping for RTW stuff and not spend a lot of money. "It's not hard to find, you just have to know where to look!" (This should be the slogan for shopping for ANYTHING in the Philippines!:D)
Great tips Knowdafish, many thanks!! Could you tell me the exact location of the RTW market in Bacong? Is there any other RTW market and where? Much appreciated. Cheers!
You are very welcome! I know EXACTLY the position you are in!:D Even though I've been to the farmers market in Bacong and been by it numerous times I don't remember what's around the street you turn off the main highway. I'll ask my wife and her friend who goes there often. The RTW is behind the farmers market area. Stay tuned! :D
