⌛ Lawmakers push for bicycle bill

Philippines to promote the use of bicycles, for public transportation in place of gas-guzzling motor vehicles to reduce fuel importation. The Department of Transportation and Communication should be mandated to launch the "Conserve by Bicycling Program" in 10 pilot areas around the country.

So what Bicycle power Jeepney ? I thought only America made laws like this. They must have money to burn. I know I would never ride a bike in the philippines to hot and to dangerous.

 

Motorbike or peddle power.

 

The number of trikes downtown should be cut in half and 2 stroke motors not allowed.

Enough is enough, the tricycle traffic is choking Dumaguete to death.

 

Too poluted to drive a bike most of the time really, not many bicycle trycles left last time I was there (there design always seemed a bit flawned to me as well). A more modern variant could well work though, in general I am all for bikes but than I am Dutch.

 

people do not like using bicycles, but always like to support their hypothetical use, the reasons stated for not using them varies in each country but there is always one excuse used by 75% of people per region.

cambodia - no spinning reflectors
thailand - no bell
ireland - ruin your cloths
philippines - too hot
various europe - traffic

there is too much loss of status, gain of odor to make bike use anything but a declining mode of transport here, for even transportation circumstances it is good at

but the tradition is alive in the sporting community, the poor and the older chaps getting a lycra clad days drinking in with the boys

the vortex created by moving traffic does concentrate pollutants on the road and they are about 3 times higher than on the pavement. if this is a concern get a filter mask

people will only do something if they want too, where there is a will there is a way, otherwise there is an excuse

but they all really support bicycles, if everybody else would do it, life would be somehow better from their gasoline vehicle. vehicle ownership will increase to western levels, pedicabs and jeepneys are much more efficient than private cars. these are the good days enjoy them, when everybody owns 1.2 cars - traffic will be different, more challenging, maybe more like downhilling

Don't see any decline in Amsterdam really, in fact there is a huge bike parking problem here. You got to create an enviorment as well, with the way filipino roads are (as so many other countries btw), nobody in his right mind will let his kids take a bicycle to school and that is where you got to start (like with most things).

btw teacher it does not seem to involve law but is a promotion campaign

i have to agree with about amsterdam, a city which uses the bicycle as a general means of transport. indeed the short lived white bike of amsterdam had to one of the loveliest public schemes implemented, pity it only take a few to bring down a scheme. but i think amsterdam is a real exception

i found cycling in the west much more dangerous than in the east. car doors opening on u is the biggest danger, u are constantly scanning car windows for occupants that are about to open the door and with parking laws someone is usually left attending the vehicle so that is alot of people to second guess, j walkers blindsided by buses are the second danger . ok i had one guy who broke a red light and the had to side slide and shoulder his side support to avoid going under the car (in london)

but a cyclists patterns reflect easier in a motorbike culture. you are not restricted to the tight motion of a car, and u are not as isolated so much more aware, i have have much less accidents her. my only one being on bohol trying to avoid a cat at night.

you also have much more gravel verges without parked cars, to avoid overtaking traffic has not estimated there take over time and children can pretty much ride the gravel verges for everywhere they need to go, except in high density areas and highways

and cars absolutely crawl here, i guess this is due to the lack of insurance and the fact that alot of the cars are owned by ofws and borrowed or are communal between a family.
the pedicabs are predicable just look along the pavement for customers and the shuffing in the back of the pedi and u will see what they are doing, i do not think car drivers even do that - too insulated and too little maneuverability


next time u are over here give the bike a go for a few days and u will look on traffic alot differently than in a car - it is safe

 

ok I will give it a try, just that I tend to avoid much physical exercise when I am over (it is a bit of a climate shock after all). I guess btw. that if I lived in Duma I would cycle, it is nice and flat and distances (in town) are perfect for a bike.

I am not really scared of trafic in Filipines, just that bicycle lanes (very common here) are safer for small children and if you are serious about promoting bicycles as a main form of transportation you need to give them an edge over other vehicles.

any idea where I could rent a bicycle?

 

I enjoy cycling, here in RP its best to cycle in the early morning or late afternoon, and fatties its a good way to get slim and fit and make room for more cold beer. Of course the motor bike is cheap to run and effectively the way to travel larger distances.

 

On the other hand stuffed with beer it is likely not so safe to drive anything
