I only stayed in Dumaguete for two months, but what I missed were:

    1. Fresh salads and real Mexican and Italian food.
    2. Salesclerks that said "Hi" and "Thank you" and seemed to have a happy attitude.
    3. Clean streets, beaches and rivers.
    4. Mornings WITHOUT a neighbors rooster waking you up!.
    5. Everyone treating you as if you were a rich kano with money to spare...

I have decided to immigrate here from Australia, been here in Dumaguete for one Month, time in Manila was two weeks, and also 6 weeks in Zamboanga. I have found friendly and not so friendly Filipinos in all three Cities, but more friendly than unfriendly I hasten to add. I have found the people here in Dumaguete MORE friendly than both the other Cities. In Australia you will find some sales assistants and cashier clerks unfriendly as well as friendly as I am sure you will find in all Cities around the world. I approach all these people with a smile, and with respect, and most, smile back, and treat me well. I did an experiment one time, and approached them with a very sour expression on my face, and little respect, and was greeted with the same, and treated accordingly. I wonder what the message there is ????????:D:wink::p:cool:

LOL! Would you believe that having the same color of skin does not dissuade vendors from charging me more? I moved here from Manila and do not speak the dialect and they think they get away with it.

Libraries; if yours doesn't have what you want, you can order it online from 20 others and it'll be sent to your local library
    Art Museums
Buying online; fast UPS/FedEx deliveries of just about anything you need.
    Concerts in college towns
Cars, Motorcycles etc. Any type you want is available, often much cheaper when second hand

Well, what you sow is what you reap. :DD
At least, you were really trying to understand the situation was, and not just judging immediately.
That's very true btw, if you smile they smile. If you talk, they talk, but if you don't, then you'll get the same treatment.

(although, the short time we spent in Alaska, the thing that i wrote above is just disregarded. The most amazing thing ever i have experienced in U.S., just in Alaska btw, was the customer service! The saleslady and all the workers in the mall, or whatever store, they really know their job, and the most amazing thing was, THEY WERE SO FRIENDLY, AND THEY WOULD A LOT TO YOU, ASK YOU WHERE YOU COME FROM, YOUR NAME, THEN THEY SHAKE HANDS AS A SIGN OF FRIENDSHIP, AND THEY WERE ALL-SMILING. That was just really beautiful. And i never expected that from the Americans, so i was kind of "culture-shocked!". :D)

I feel pretty safe saying that people try to charge me more and do it more frequently than they do to you. (and I'm assuming that you are filipino)

My point was that there are laws against charging to much based off of your race or ethnicity or even speaking a different language. Not just hearing a mouth full from the person they try to rip off.

Formerly of New Jersey but more recently of Paris, France (12-year-stay). Relocated to Tanjay, Negros Oriental in Dec. 2011

    What I miss most…

    1) all of Paris - the good, the bad but perhaps not the ugly

    2) sitting at sidewalk cafés and having a delicious café crème (not that nasty powder stuff they give you here with your cup of coffee)

    3) the French voice

    4) NOT being stared at

    5) rules & regulations that are actually followed (especially motorway safety regulations!)

    Ok, so I have a 6th one…

    6) being around people who are NOT one of the following: those who are obsessed with money or those who are always striving to be “sosyal” (I guess their version of keeping up with the Joneses, or in this case the Ramirezes?) or those who are constantly trying to make a quick buck off you. d*mn, but I actually miss those bleeding-heart French socialists!

And ditto to Derivative_guru’s list. Sounds like he’s been here a while and can cut thru the bull**** :-)
