o_O When my Wife read this she smiled and said, I like that jimeves answer, "Welcome to the Philippines" :D
She went on to say but honey, we have always done that and it only seems to Upset you Foreigners, Do we moan at you when you all loose your tempers when you can't get your own way or when you tell us, you would never get away with that in so and so Country Well let me remind you and you can tell your friends, You are not in so and so Country! :(

I believe that that was the end of the Conversation.

    JP,

    I just wonder sometimes is any of this is taught here???.Just a couple of observations;

-people stop on the very busy stairs at Lee to text or have conversations..
-people stop at the top of the up escalator to have conversations.
-motorcyclists entering on to main highway from right side road,do not stop or even look..
-person in nice restaurant talking loudly on cell phone.
-parents let their children run around and make noise in resto/bar.
-moviegoers enter theater in middle or near end of a good movie.
    -moviegoers texting during movie.
-this is a good one...parent changing diapers, of child, on a eating table in a nice resto/bar.

Do you have any to share ??....Miguel

So back to Topic.o_O Hmmm Manners and things, I was at Lee Plaza yesterday Evening, at the Checkout there was a very obnoxious Foreigner laying into a Supervisor about something or Other, having taken part in this thread and bearing in Mind another Thread about the behaviour of Foreigners I sometimes Wonder if we have any Inclining, that we can be as Guilty as the Locals when it comes to Manners, Respect & Common sense. I also wonder if they do as we are here, have Forums where they discuss Us, maybe that's why some don't talk English in front of us all the Time, They really are talking about us!:(

We can all be Sarcastic at times and never give a thought to our own behaviour.

    Just a Thought my friends.

I don't think giving the seat up to a pretty girl counts. That's just trying to score some tail. If we were to base it off of my standards while 18 or 19 I'm not sure I would give credit for the middle aged women either. If it was female, moved and it showed interest I probably wouldn't have turned it down.

Joking aside, I do see that Filipino are generally courteous to the elderly. My gf's brothers seem like pretty good guys to me and they are very polite and courteous while visiting the apartment as well. They weren't raised in Dumaguete City though. From my experience you are much more likely to find polite and courteous people away from the urbanized areas of the Philippines. Some of my best experiences with the Filipino people have been in small towns far from densely populated areas. This seems to hold true anywhere in the world though. Seems the urbanization of the world is responsible for many of the problems we face in today's world.

It does seem like expats either have their rose colored glasses on or are on the other side of just complaining and hating. I'm in the middle I guess and if I had to sit down and write out the positives and negatives I would probably have more positives.

I have spent more than 21 years working and living overseas (getting close to half my life) so I think I am very open and respectful to other cultures and traditions but I do believe there are some very unique things here that are frustrating to a western mind set.

This is Asia but the Filipino culture seems to be the most mixed of different cultures than say the Koreans or Japanese for example. As we all know it is a bit of a challenge with our upbringing to deal with some of the differences here. If I'm out fishing in a remote location I will take a leak outdoors...but when I have a house with 2 CR's and a guest feels better to p*ss on the side of my house it makes little sense so me. I've gotten pretty drunk on a number of occasions but still figure out how to walk into the house and use the bathroom.

I'm sure we could all come up with some stories that would make our friends and family back home either laugh or be shocked. At the end of the day though I have a great woman who treats me well and a family that does do their best to work with the differences without being too judgemental.

    Shawn

Thank you Jack! It goes the other way, too. That door guard who opens the door, I look him firmly in the eye and say thank you. It seems to make their day, same with calling a Filipino sir, ma'am less so. I also tip my hat to the door guards, a holdover from the days when you had to remove your hat for security reasons, the guards seem to get a kick out of that too!:D

You know, while we are here on this Subject, the one thing that I guess will never change but actually does get right up my nose, is the Please and Thank You's ( well the Total Lack in many cases) I asked my daughter (15 so no child exactly) Why do you never say Please and Thank You? She said well no one else does and anyway I don't really like them ( her 2 cousins on giving her a Xmas gift) OH! so you accept the Gift but no Thank You! Well she replied, They never said it either.
I tried to explain the 2 wrongs never make a right. HA! that's just the Foreigner in you Coming out. was as much of an Argument she could muster.

I asked if she said her P's &T's at School, Yes we have to or we get marked Down. Not a Happy young lady when I said her Allowance may just Start to get Marked down if things don't change.

"Daddy" Please don't Do That. AH! said I, different story when the boot is on the Other Foot & you want something

Thank You for reading this mornings Sermon:p

    JP:wink:

o_O Ps It can be and should be taught, Lee Plaza, Cangs and all the others Places sales and other staff are more than Polite IMHO

 Pulling your leg a little Davy but you can see where I am Coming from, They don't seem to want to change. Change means Progression, Progression means altering their way of Life. Changing their way of life means hard Work to Obtain, that is why many Marry us so they don't have to work hard for things that they would never have been able to afford. Easier to Stay as you are is in the minds of many. It is a great Shame but it is what it is.

At the bottom of the article it showed that 10 were happy, 1 was angry and 1 was indefferent.
    I dont follow that statement.
I have always considered that Pinoy's were proud of their country, as in they always talk about their modern shopping malls, but never about poverty.
They talk about their love of food, but not healthy eating. Is that good or bad.
As a Liverpudlian proud of my city, I find my fellow locals will criticize their own city, but dont like it if anybody outside does!
