Brian, $400 US is about 6 months worth of Philippine Blue Cross in an upper tier plan which has been highly recommended to me. The Philippines seems to offer good insurance that I could not buy in the US for $6k a year.

When I had my booboo as passenger on a motorcycle last year and was admitted to a clinic over night with my infected roadrash so they could administer IV antibiotics my GF stayed with me in the double bed. The Philippines seems to be strangely advanced over western medicine.:D

Robert, I will agree with you here but there are a lot, of Doubting Thomas's out there that would not, personally I have albeit at a cost, had very good and I might say better treatment for my Post Stroke Health than I ever did in Spain. Only the UK Surpassed but now not an Option, cost wise in travel etc. [IMG]

Unfortunately, arguably the two most popular paediatricians only run a clinic, after they make their hospital checks. Painful wait in a small crowded room, if you get there early enough to get a seat, else join the crowd in the hallway. Also, some meds are very expensive, such as anti-meningitis, PHP 3000-4000. Not a complaint, just a heads up for those considering parenthood.

Well; asawa is wanting a baby, and I know there will be a long nose charge to that compared to her last home birth. I also have a list of medication here, some is unavailable in the Philippines, some here is only prescribed after phoning a Government section who can give the approval to write the script. I have a rough road ahead of me I feel, as I am only entitled to 6 weeks of Medicine after I leave the country, so will try and get my Carer to fill in the scripts here then post it to me.

Then I have to fend for myself and buy my own pain medication in Dumaguete, and I have absolutely NO IDEA WHERE to start yet... All I know is that I do not want to end up on anything that becomes addictive, been there, don't like it one bit! But I will need to get onto it pronto after my arrival to try and work out what I can source as replacements for what I cannot buy over the counter at the pharmacy there...

Robert; I have had a reply from Philhealth, but still need to contact Philippine Blue Cross to gain a quote... With a broken leg which will not heal, asawa wanting a baby, anak 7 years old gawd only knows what lays ahead of me so I would like some peace of mind that I am mostly covered somehow should the worst occur...

The nurses arent paid very well like in the states, so dont expect the best service. During the night most of them sleep at the nursing stations. If you need them you have to have your helper go wake up a nurse or tell her to come over. I've had no problems with their friendliness however.

Like mentioned everything is outdated and so is the technology. For minor treatments or if there is a life or death situation requiring immediate attention its obviouosly the closest hospital with good service. I would prefer it over Holy Child, however if youre planning for a major operation, I'd reccommend Chong Hui in Cebu. Its expesive, but the service is great, doctors are top notch, and the everything is newer and nicer. A child motorist crashed into my moto while i was driving, and I had to have knee surgery since i surrered a fractured kneecap and torn ligaments. I went to Chong Hui and the operating physician told me Im lucky he's in town which is rare because he's 1 or 2 surgeons in the province that know how to do that type of surgery. Otherwise I would have to go to Manila...

Is there a foreigner surcharge for lab work at Silliman? Or for anything else? I ask because the last time I went to the cashier to pay for lab work, the clerk, checking the cost, used the word "foreigner".

They can be stupid. Surely they understand that the word "foreigner" is English. I hate hearing that word when talking about prices.

In 9 years I have never known it. If you feel that you have been overcharged, best thing to do is talk to the in-Charge of the Admin Office. Just ask the guard where her office is.

You may have just heard her say " Foreigner" because it was you at the desk and not your Wife/G/F as most of us let to do the talking.

I guess there is a reason why, at least my, insurance company don't pay for treatment at Silliman.
Get a PhilHealth insurance through your spouse. That covers 50% of the costs, which means they can't fool you, as PhilHealth will object if they overcharge, and you will object if your part of the bill is more than 50%.
