    Dustin, they are certainly the most expensive of the 3 majors but do provide the best coverage. My job involved regional travelling (Australia is a huge country) and often had to use my personal phone as the work phone (Optus) had no signal.

    As to the shares I have been a shareholder since they were first floated and whilst they have not been spectacular in terms of increase in share price they have consistently provided dividend yield of 5% to 8% over the years (currently sitting about 6%) . So for a defensive share, good for pension funds (we call it superannuation) and long term investment.

    I would rate them as the best in Australia however the most expensive. If the talk becomes more than just talk, I for one would be keen to use their services (notwithstanding my very small shareholding).

    Yeah, that was kinda my point. This Telstra can't be any worse than what's currently around. If only Telstra and San Miguel could just figure out how to put internet bandwidth in a beer bottle all the internet problems in the Philippines would be gone overnight. :biggrin:

    I had read that elsewhere. I was just curious what the Anonymous poster was basing his/her opinion off of.

    I'd be interested in how they plan to manage it to offer real competition. They are looking at a wireless service to compete which will have many obstacles that plague such services especially in a country with so many infrastructure and electrical issues plus they will need to offer a true 4G in every decent sized city on up which isn't easy to manage w/o figuring out how to put up a LOT more cell towers. Further I'm doubting Philippine law allows them to put up their own dishes on existing towers when its owned by competition. We also know that its very common for major companies to already bribe the local city councils to deny new projects like how Robinson's in Dumaguete bribed the council to turn down SM's attempt to put up a mall in Dumaguete.

    But in the end if they can't offer a very cheap 3Mbps wireless connection and offer decent priced 5Mbps+ speeds (true speeds mind you, not just testing to their local service but internationally) it won't put enough pressure on PLDT and Globe to change. They need to offer something better and cheaper at the same time. However as a wireless service I wouldn't be surprised if they instead followed a monthly cap allowance which also wouldn't force PLDT and Globe to improve even if their speeds are greater.

    In the last several weeks, there has been so much noise and positive online sentiment on Telstra’s intention to enter the Philippine mobile Internet market as challenger to the duopoly of Smart and Globe.

    The plan to launch in the Philippines sometime in 2016 is not yet firm but talks with San Miguel Corp. as the local partner in the joint venture has been ongoing as early as August. However, top brass of Telstra have been quoted that the Australian giant is willing to shell out as much as $1 billion to represent its 40 per cent investment in the joint venture (by law, foreign corporations are only allowed a maximum of 40 per cent ownership in select industries such as telecoms).

    The rabid excitement and support for Telstra is expected as many Internet subscribers in the Philippines are dissatisfied with the current level of service and support they are getting from existing providers.

    However, very little detail is available as to how Telstra is going to penetrate and compete against the two dominant players. Our best guess is that their service will most likely be through a wireless network using exiting LTE technology. This is the fastest and more cost-effective way to roll-out a national broadband network in the country, considering the archipelagic nature of the Philippines.

    We then also consider the track record of San Miguel, which funded the establishment of Wi-Tribe back in 2007 in partnership with Q-Tel. That venture did not quite pan out and they’ve been under rehabilitation for some time now.

    Which in turn will make PLDT's and Globe's services far more bearable as their networks get less crowded and down to the levels they were designed to support.

    When you are realistic about it - that is all everybody should expect "IN ALL REALITY" <---- my favorite saying - hahahahahahah ....

    We want better service, better speeds, better data, better prices, etc ....

    I don't care if it is Globe, PLDT, Telstra or whoever. As long it offers me that "fair and happy" feeling of getting something valid and solid.

    I do NOT wish to change to Telstra, have a very strong and long term HATE relationship with them.

    But am happy to use them to get a fairer deal from one of the others.

    I agree. I don't really care who the carrier/provider is as long as they deliver what is promised for a fair price and offer reasonable customer service... Somebody pinch me I must be dreaming again!!!
