Hello Globetrotter23 I have an American friend that was put off Malaysia K/K by the state department travel warning, the area of concern was Lahad Datu which is on the other side of the island, I personally think the Philippine activists are closer to Dumaguete than to K/K

I didn't even know the State Dept. had a warning on Sabah (the province) but if so, it surely wouldn't be about KK. I could be wrong, but it always seems to us to be a very peaceful place. We just got back from there today - once again, we really enjoyed it! It was AirAsia (Zest's) inaugural flight from Cebu and they made a big to-do when we landed - folks in traditional costume, gift bags, etc. Of course, that's a one time deal, but it made it interesting!

We go there for the islands and the animals. The islands can be accessed for $10pp for the 15-20 minute boat ride. There are also nature parks where you can see some neat animals, and we had a decent cottage pie at an Irish restaurant (Kilkenney's). I'll stop plugging it after this (!), but I think it's a good choice for a visa run (especially when you get a great ticket price - we paid 400 pesos each way from Cebu). Here are some pics:
