Don, sounds like you have Scitica (Sciatica - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) I suffer form it severely, have done since age 24 when I first "did myself in" putting a computer in the boot (trunk for the US Guys) in 1983 (They were BIG in those days) Could not even put my left foot on a clutch for two years. Now I am significantly older, I often forget my age and cause the same injury again by my stupidity in lifting and doing things I should leave to younger guys (somehow, they are just never around when you need them :( ) A very good friend of mine is a Nuro-Surgeon in North Carolina. Four years ago, when we were in Thailand, he told a mate of mine who had a severe pain in the neck (yes, really the neck) to take IbuProfen, minimum of 2000mg per day. My friend scoffed at this. Last year, I injured myself and I remembered the advice so I tried it. WOW, wish I had done it a lot sooner. He uses it for his patients very successfully. It is basically an anti-inflammatory drug but works as a pain-killer in smaller doses. I buy the 400mg tablets from Generics Pharmacy (P200 for one Box of 100). Take them after a meal, 800Mg at a time, three times a day. Relief well within 1-2 days for me and able to move normally and I actually sleep well. Of course, if you have a hangover, it does help :D as well Read/head the warnings about Stomach issues and side effects, but it is a lifestyle saver for me and I only take drugs (other than alcohol) when seriously in need. Research the Internet on Ibuprofen, it is quite interesting Best of Luck PP
I can second that, I have 4 and 5 worn disk, and sciatica down my left leg. Can not take Ibuprofen as I have problems with my stomach. Tried Acupuncture 13 secessions, it cured the sciatica but the pain in my lower back remains. Pain management, that what the specialist insist here in the UK. I take codeine pain killers, but they are addictive and only take the edge away from the pain. there are certain exercise you can do to strengthen the back but you need to see a specialist first. Jim
Those of us that suffer, know how bad it can be some days, simple things become as hard as climbing mount everest, let alone the missus. Actually, how I fixed my original problem was kind of strange. Being a rough and tough young aussie, I left the alternative stuff until it was all that was left, I had tried all other options. On the recommendation of a friend, who I am now convinced hated me, I ended up at a place in Melbourne called "Mentone Chiropractic" but they were more into alternative healing than chiro .. I had Electrolysis (electric shocks), Acupuncture, but the most effective was the remedial massage. I recall vividly laying face down on the table at a tender age of 24 (I think), in my prime, while the "doc" grabbed onto my left leg and stuck his thumb in the crack of my bum, and he stretched and pulled my left leg like crazy. At one stage, early on in the first session, I turned to him with baleful, watery eyes and informed him that I was a virgin and wished to stay that way, so would he please make sure that his thumb did not slip. He actually laughed so hard we had to restart the session .. Just my good fortune :( After each session, I had to go to the local gym and get into the hot tub for an hour so I would not bruise. Three Sessions, virginity intact, voila, no problem for years until I did something real stupid again, but I already knew what was coming so did not let it get that far gone before I did something about it. Cheers
Have you tried The Alexander Technique. I tried, but did not work for me. must be a mind over matter thing. http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&so...sg=AFQjCNGIaLJphaCQGquwskE5bp8ljTaTSg&cad=rja
Don: From what you describe, it is likely you have a lumbar nerve compression. You may benefit from ice to reduce swelling, a lumbar belt if available. You can purchase tramadol 50mg tabs from most pharmacies which is analgesic and antiinflamatory, 50mg every 6 hrs, not to exceed 200mg daily. The question is what is causing the compression if a structural misalignment corrective adjustments are the answer. If this doesn't improve or you notice changes in bowel or urinary function I would suggest a scan to rule out disc herniation. My best to you. Dr. Mike
Sounds very much like my Sciatica that I have other then mine goes down my right sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve goes from your lower back right above your buttocks down your right and left legs being your right and left sciatic nerve. Now when I was pretty much in a wheel chair for 2 weeks back in the US and visiting the VA hospital for sciatica and being so painful couldn't walk or stand I was prescribed Methylprednisolone from the VA med center and it worked like a charm. I'd suggest talking to a doctor about the possibility of taking it and also its a corticosteroid so need to talk to a doctor about the risks with any potential health issues you may have. As long as your doctor says your fit enough to take it you can get online the dosepack information online which is what is commonly prescibed for such in the US.
I have a persistant problem similar to the OP and I suggest some anti-inflamatory you can get over the counter and some gel packs you can put in the freezer and apply to your back untill you can get the swelling down. When you get the swelling down you can figure out what you need to not do to injure yourself again. You will also learn what takes pressure off your problem area, for example, I sleep on my back with a pillow or wadded up pair of jeans under my left buttock or if I sleep on my right side I keep 2 pillows between my thighs. These keep the pressure off for me. If I sleep on my left side I may not be able to walk tomorrow. Inversion therepy would probably help also. Anyone with back pain might want to google Teeter table. I feel for you man. I was paralyzed for 2 months and aged about 5 years in that time. I do without any drug now on a day to day basis but I take a fairly large dose of naproxin sodium ( aleve ) over the counter stuff on the days I have flare ups. Hope you feel less bad soon. Robert K
All you guys are helping Don so much, I met him today and he had the massage from the old lady that has helped my family. He looked better and I hope it helped him. That's what friends are for. Ron
Don: You are no bother at all, I only wish I could be of more help from a distance. I am waiting for my wife's green card to arrive and then we will be Dumaguete bound. The Tramadol is a prescription drug, but available in all pharmacies and if you ask for it I think they will sell it to you. If you are taking other drugs tell the pharmacist. If you should require a scan either an MRI or C/T would visualize well, the MRI being more revealing. For now I am hoping you make some improvement. Dr. Mike
