Hi all, I am a new member here and planning my retirement in Negros. We are looking at Dumaguete. I have a couple of questions if you will:

    1. How hard is it to find all the materials to build a house in Dumaguete? I know there are no Lowe's, but is it difficult to find lumber, electrical, fixtures, plumbing, tile, etc? Does anyone have a list of suppliers?

    2. How long does it take to get to Cebu City?

    3. Do you normally do closing for real estate transactions in an attorney's office? Any recommendations for an attorney?

    Thanks,
    Rob

You can find just about anything you need here as far as building materials are concerned. There are several options to get to Cebu city it's not that far away

I'll tackle the getting to Cebu part. In physical distance, Cebu is nearby. The time it takes to get there is another matter.

The good news: A recent Monday, Wednesday, Friday and now Sunday air service links the two cities in less than 45 minutes.

The less good news: Bus - boat - bus connections are frequent but consume 5 1/2 hours of your life. It's about the same by boat.

Each of these means has advantages and disadvantages. It will depend on your own personal requirements to make your choice.

    Thanks

I appreciate the information. I can't wait to get out of the pressure cooker way of life here and make a job out of building a little house there. I love it there and am anxious to meet some of you when we get there. I know building a house will make me thirsty(er) for a cold beer.

    HI rob,

welcome to DumagueteInfo and all the best for your plans.
I am sure you'll find plenty of answers already on the forum and like you see, if you have questions there are usually some quick answers.

additional to the flight... its a short flight but you spend 15 hours of your lifetime per booking to find out if your C-card was working... (Sir dafitz, I couldn't resist... hehe  )

Hi, Rhoody. I think I mentioned it in another thread. Cebu Pacific seems to have gotten its credit card posting problem sorted out. Knock on wood!

Anne and I have our Cebu flights for the rest of the year booked at PP 488 per person, one way. You are right. It takes time. Better here with my Philippine coffee at the console than on a bus with warm cola and a hard-boiled egg.

Apologies to OP for hi-jacking his thread.

Welcome to Dumaguete and Negros Oriental.

What made you choose Dumaguete a place of retirement? Care to introduce yourself please?

Your architect/contractor is your first link to the list of suppliers of building materials here. Most of the major hardwares are just within the city so its a good way to know your way around by canvassing prices if you may.

Major suppliers here are Matiao, JB Marketing, Citi Hardware, Negros Builders, Zenith, Moriah, Golden Rule, Octagon.

Cebu is 3.5 to 4 hrs by bus, 6-7 hrs by boat that sails at 11pm, and 15 minutes by air if you can find a confirmed booking which I hear is a hit or miss.

All legal transactions are probably best done in an attorney's office though that is not the normal practice for low value purchases.

    Good luck.
