Hello, I'm a long time Philippines and Asia traveler. I'm retired in currently living California. I've lived, worked and traveled in Asia and I am considering a move out of the US, probably to the Philippines. Dumaguete is at the top of my list of places to visit. The increased cost of air travel is shocking. I'm looking for the best reasonably cheap way to get to Manila and on the Dumaguete. Any tips or advise would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

How much is "shocking?" Tickets out of L.A. are pretty cheap. You could probably get a ticket for around $700 one way which is pretty good. If flying directly to Dumaguete is too expensive then look into flying to Manila and then get another ticket to Dumaguete using Cebu Pacific Air.

Otherwise, have you happened to notice gas prices lately? That would be the reason for the shocking prices.

    Still seems expensive

I flew Los Angeles to Bangkok less than 3 months ago for under $800 US. Best fare I've found LAX to MNL is just under $1300 US for a shorter flight. Hoping for a better deal but probably not going to happen.

Is that one way? Is there any requirements for it? There appears to be one way tickets from LAX to MNL for $760 about two months out with 20 hours of flight time.

Methinks you have it a little bass ackwards. Sure there are good flights and deals from LAX to MNL. That still leaves you a long way from DGT (Dumaguete). Give a consideration to alternate routing from the US west coast to Cebu, which is the Philippines second major aerial port of entry. Connections from there to Dumaguete are far more convenient. Try a search engine such as this one, which is an example only of the many available to you:

Cheap Flights, Airline Tickets, Cheap Airfare & Discount Travel Deals - Kayak.com

I use Kayak too, it is a great tool.

Oddly, at one point I was able to get tickets substantially cheaper going to Manila rather than Dumaguete. Maybe I was just doing a funky search, but now I can get a ticket straight to Dumaguete for not much more. So yeah, I guess the best way to go is to try flying right in to Dumaguete.

you talk about coming from LAX..
there are several ways of going to Duma but for sure not straight from LA...

    Ridrider,
another option. If you can get a cheap flight tp BKK, you can look for a flight from there to Cebu with AirAsia. Air Asia also serves KL or Singapore.

For flights MNL - Duma you may wanna check Cebu-pacific. You can book online with them (they have some probs with several C-Cards at present) cheapest flights with them are tuesday to thursday.

    cheers

    Rhoody
